I like the Teflon plates with replaceable pads. But I still hook other people's trailers once in awhile. That dirty grease will ruin them. I have the bolt on plate on one trailer and the cheap clip on disk on the other trailer. Just carry extra clamps. If i must, I can grease my standard wheel and pull other trailers, just scrap clean when done.

Some, not all. Fontaine, Holland,Jost. Your name brands each offer different models. Then there is the knock offs. A newer 50k Holland has no zerks, older model Hollands had zerks on pivots. Just spray linkages down once in awhile.

What are the divots/channels/grooves etc for on a 5th wheel?

My mate reckons you should fill them with grease and they are there so that grease can seep out etc and keep the 5th wheel lubed.

I say they are so that they catch dirt, leaves, small bits and pieces etc and they catch these bits of junk instead of them being in between 5th wheel and plate, so for this reason they should be kept empty and cleaned out

    Who is correct?

I can tell that’s a Jost fifth wheel, because mine looks just like it.

That middle third on mine is bare and I only put grease on the outside.

One of our crack team of parts changers did a PM on it once and put all the grease in the middle. I just shook my head and thought “could anyone possibly be this stupid?”

This ^. You could use less even, so long as you don't push it all off when you get under a trailer should be alright. Drop your airbags when you back under the trailer. I have used a crap ton, with a spatula and a big tub of grease, and I have used a little bit. Most people don't drop their bags backing under a trailer and will push all the grease off themselves.

Well original Jost was making knock offs, so they have some that look like Holland, and some look like Fontaine.

Looks ok. After greasing my 5th wheel, I drop my airbags and back close to the king pin and them air them back up. This way the grease stays on the 5th wheel and doesn't get scrapped off by the front of the trailer.

Not too much if you get under the trailer with your air dumped, then air it back up before hooking. Some drivers drop the trailer too low and then that problem becomes unavoidable.
