Gotta take a relay from Austinburg, Ohio over to Chicopee, Ma tonight. Looks like the mileage is about the same going I90 or I88. I haven't been across either. The forecast is calling for snow. Which route would be better/safer? Thanks.
I90 or I88 to cross NY with snowy forecast?

The shortest route.

I90 gets a lot more traffic and is kept much cleaner, so that would be my choice if your company allows you to run toll roads. I88 is more rural and doesn't see as many snowplows. Plus it has more hills than I90.

There's a guy crossing New York on the 90 right now. Snowing but the roads look good for now. He's near Albany at the moment. I used to live in Buffalo, so the 90 is well maintained across the whole state. It is toll though. But you already knew that. The southern route is more hilly but it is also a well maintained route. Either way would be good. Just from my familiarity with the area.

If you can afford the toll on 90 take it. They keep it cleaner when it snows.North of Binghamton there aren't many places with truck parking.

90 will be quicker, flatter, and has a toll. Just avoid it during "lake affect" episodes (THIS IS EASTERN SNOW
). It can also be a bear with blowing conditions. If you are going now/tonight no worries. Tomorrow might be blowing some, but like the others said they keep it well plowed/salted.

There are service areas to park every 30??? miles or so and they sure are handy if the weather gets really rough, or you just need a break.

I prefer I88 in good weather. There is less traffic and no city drivers. That being said. I would run I90 in the snow. The thruway authority maintains the road better then anyone. I have seen them plowing water off the road before. If it were me and it was snowing, I would run 90.

I-90 is better if you can afford it. Much flatter. It ain't cheap though. I always had to dodge tolls in NY. Seems like it was like $87 last time I ran it. I'm sure it's more now.
I think it was 2007, I delivered above Rochester when a storm hit. They got 3 feet of snow and I was stuck there for two days. I finally got out and the company dead headed me a record 650 miles. I thought I had it rough trying to get out of there empty... until I passed a botail.xlsdraw Thanks this.
