Not making this up, what is this crap about making things up¿

For who don’t understand, that’s a rhetorical question, not to be answered.

393.86 Rear impact guards and rear end protection.

part a section (4) Guard rear surface. At any height 560 mm (22 inches) or more above the ground, the rearmost surface of the horizontal member of the guard must be within 305 mm (12 inches) of the rear extremity of the vehicle. This paragraph shall not be construed to prohibit the rear surface of the guard from extending beyond the rear extremity of the vehicle. Guards with rounded corners may curve forward within 255 mm (10 inches) of the side extremity.

fyi, why would I know this?

I don’t know ... maybe going to court to get two tickets dismissed (issued within an hour of each other on the same trailer) because they were issued when the bottom rail was pushed in at 9 1/2 inches on a trailer I just purchased. The referee who adjudicated the tickets read the regulations and dismissed them because it was not over 12 inches and not a violation.

You made the correct call. My next call would be to Safety and then the owner with pictures. That is your CSA score they want to trash. Nope, it would stay in the shop instead of biting me in the back pocket.

I won LOL. They replaced it yesterday. I actually walked in while the young mechanic was struggling with it and gave him a hand.

Even with it being legal as @Ridgeline pointed out, I'd replace it too. Because it's better than getting stopped and hassled by the local cartel. And once they stop you, who knows how many imaginary chafed airlines they might find.

I understand this completely, but with the bolts sheared off the ends on the outside supports and cracks where the main impact is, I’m sure a lawyer could pick apart that regulation (if they could prove prior damage) if an injury or fatality accident happened. I don’t think it would be worth it to not replace it. Just my opinion.

One thing we haven’t discussed......how fast would one have to go in reverse to hit something solid enough to cause that type of damage!? Unless a piece of equipment hit it. But with these drivers, I’ll bet it was backed into something.

Not very fast, because the impact point was all in one spot. Not the same as getting rear-ended by a car. That spreads the impact out, and cars have crumple zones to bleed energy during the crash. Plus, the impact in the case of your trailer caused the supports to twist, which helped shear the bolts off like a pair of scissors.

At least that's the results of my investigation, lol.

Probably backed into a dock with the bumper lock extended and got damaged. or WHO knows what could have happened. Usually the bumper lock pulls the center out when a driver tries to leave the dock before the lock is released.

Pro Tip: When using bollards to straighten bumpers, make sure you place the chain low on the bollard or you'll pull it over.
