Ice road trucking

    Did it ever happened to you? Or do you know somebody that went through that? And if the answer is "yes", don't you think that. Hearing about those stories we should learn how to be more (or fully) prepared for those situations? Just asking...

    I too want to run a season on the north roads. However I do think that the highway driving up this way in winter is far more dangerous than those ice roads. How much trouble can you get in going 30 km/h? On the highways you are going 105 and the road can turn icy quickly.

    If you use common sense and a little of know how, neither is that dangerous. Ignorance is the most dangerous thing you can face.

    No cell phones will work up that way and satellite coverage begins to get spotty. If it is snowing heavy forget any form of satellite communication.

    Why yes,just this past year in,- N.Y.,Pa.,In.,Ill.,Mo.,Ar.,Mo.,Ok.,(the ABSOLUTE worst) and Tx.,and other states I am sure I have missed.It must agree with someone else"s point,it MUST be more dangerous in the lower "48" than in Canada or Alaska,as there are more 4-wheelers to contend with,-like playing a video game dodging them-but on the "Ice Roads" there is more solitude,with no one to help in certain situations..I have nothing against enthusiasm,but why plan on what college to attend while one is in 1st grade??:biggrin_2554: :biggrin_255:

    I agree with Bumpyi49.

    The northeast is no joke driving in the winter too; frequent substantial snow storms, coupled with the crowded, urban highways, freeways, sidestreets make it really trying at times.

    You guys, are both, RIGHT! I am sure that the lower 48 can be far far more dangerous than Alaska or Canada. That is ( I think), because nobody, or very few truckers have the proper gear to start with. Even the winter tires for those that drive the lower 48 will not be as good and profferional as i'm sure that there are for the ones that engage on the ice roads. I strongly believe that black ice is far more dangerous than any ice road in the north.
    And again: I'm not planing on doing this tomorrow or anytime soon.

    That's why we started in the spring. Before witer comes, we will have more experience, and hopefuly we will handle emergency situations much better.

    since non of you can read past the word TV in my post, i'll explain.


    Here is what happens in REAL life, #1 they drive in conovys on the ice so no being stranded not an option, secound the ice roads are patroled 24/7 by security, as you'll see/hear from Sean himself, he has more videos on his Facebook, and in the video he'll explain why there not on YouTube

    Since you know it ALL ( you referenced the TV show ) , they do that to the GOLD mines for SECURITY reasons as well as it being a PRIVATE road , other ICE roads ( there are quite a few ) all operate in different situations.

    The DALTON highway is not an actual ICE ROAD its used year round , just a bit smoother when its POTholes are filled with ice / snow.

    There are ICE ROADS in Northern Ontario and Quebec that are not much more than cow paths and there are no CONVOYS or support vehicles trailing along , couple trucks at a time if your lucky.

    yes which Is why I originaly mentioned the TV show when End of the road said my experiances may be differant, I said that so he would know what ice roads I was talking about.


    And if you watched that video you'd know about the convoys he was talking about lol


    And im 99% sure these are Diamond mines not gold, I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure thats what Yellowknife services. End of the road would probably know for sure...

    and BTW both of the Canadian Ice roads that where featured in season 1 and 2 of Ice Road Truckers are private roads, hence the rules,regulations, and security. only season 3 the Dalton Highway in AK is a public ice road, and allot of the areas serviced by the dalton are only accessible during the ice road season....

    u still have to live close b4 the companies will hire you,.... BTW try trucking in india, a ice road trucker quit b4 the trip was over
