This is my first post so forgive me if I break any rules I am not yet aware of...
I'd like to reach out to all drivers and get their input on my specific "Ideal" situation.
I have a tendency to write more than is necessary so here it is in a nut shell:
-I'm single (divorced)
-I'm young (29)
-Willing to relocate (live in Las Vegas now)
-I love driving long distances and have no circumstances that require "home time".
-Willing to work holidays/weekends.
-I have no qualms (and would actually prefer) about virtually live out of my truck.
-Having "dedicated routes" isn't important to me.
-Driving record is clean, stand up citizen, good looking, yada yada
-If I could wave a magic wand and have it my way I'd get a PO BOX, put the little bit of stuff I own (that I can't bring on the truck with me) in storage and be on the road for months at a time. If I was going to take "home time" out of the truck I'd just stay at a weekly wherever I needed to be.... (is any of this unreasonable?)
I've been told there are drivers like me who will go on the road for months on end and then take extra time off for several weeks and go on vacation... Oh yeah, and I would prefer to be a solo driver. I'm not averse to team driving, but I'd have to be pretty tight with whomever it was...
The above has been said to make me an "Ideal candidate" for this gig. I don't know if that is recruiter talk or the truth which is why I'm here.
I am working really hard in school and would like to make it in this industry, and enjoy it! I'm presently in school full time. First of Four weeks is behind me. On Friday I passed 5/5 of my DMV exams to get my instructions permit.
The companies that I have pre hires for are:
Werner
Swift
Covenant
I am cautious to jump in with Werner with the large amount of negative comments I have seen all over the net.
Covenant only runs teams in the West, so it isn't ideal for the time being...
This has made Swift my preference, though I've heard chatter that they have made changes with their truck issueing policy which would ruin my magic situation.
I really appreciate any input you all would have. Perhaps there are options that I have not been made aware of yet? I'd love to hear from both those who have several years of experience and those who are in their first year. Also married and single folks... your input and advice would be very appreciated. I know there will be trial by error, but I'd like to give myself the best opportunity to succeed coming out of the gate.
I look forward to a safe and rewarding career and wish you all a very happy holiday season!

All what you are willing to do is what training companies expect from all newbies . They won't be impressed . There are thousands others like you .
"Several weeks off ? ". You'll need to start your job search over after that .
Red Hot Mess Thanks this. -
I didn't make a post asking such questions if I knew the answers.
I'm aware of my ignorance, which is why I'm asking these questions...
I'm aware that recruiters will say one thing and the truth will be another, which again is why I'm asking these questions...
I'd appreciate advice... not to be laughed at.... -
Swift is ok !!
Werner has alot of complaints against them

You may want to check with Knight. They have a terminal in Las Vegas. I don't remember if they hire inexperienced drivers. Starting out you need to concentrate on learning and getting experience. There are some carriers that might allow you to stay out for months at a time. You will need to check around. But, the first thing you need to do is get experience. Once you have a year or two of solid experience it will be easier to find what you want.
