I have been trying to think lately of some kind of idea, something that would make otr life easier. Just day to day things that you use that could be easier or lighter or anything. Shoot me your ideas of things you think could use improvement or change, something attainable by a small town Minnesota native.

    A refrigerator helps. :biggrin_25525:

Honestly, not quite sure what you're getting at? Life in the truck? Driving tips?

Something that would make otr life easier could be anything, things you could use in the truck, something on the interstate that would make it easier or smoother. Basically something that isn't there that would make it easier, or more comfortable. Not looking for tips, or really into laws but something that can be built by infrastructure.

If I go back OTR, and it's looking like I just might, I'm going to be bringing my computer, which I've always done, but this time I won't be paying for an air card so my internet time will be limited. With that said, I've always wanted to do more writing. I have a number of story ideas and want to work on those. I also have some other ideas for projects that involve writing and if I could get some of those completed, I may be able to make some $$ with them.

Don't know if writing strikes your fancy but there's a lot of things that can be done. I met a driver with my last company who made jewelery while out on the road.

Maybe you could invent a small exercise item that truckers would use out on the road.

The point is, it's limited only by one's imagination.

well it might be a good idea if there were drive thru windows for truckers at Micky D's, and such, but then given many drivers are fat and over-weight, why make it that easy for them to not get up, out of the truck and actually have to walk to get thier daily dosage of heart stopping artery clogging fat....(so strike this idea)

maybe MORE rest areas, well lit up and actually cleaned..??

maybe more DOT scale houses that actually allow truckers to take the 10 hour break and NOT disturb them

maybe wider shoulders instead of the bicycle sized ones many states have now

maybe exits that when you take them, you can easily get back on the highway, instead of going thru a town to get back on

maybe more lights along the highways that actually work and are bright

maybe better white lines painted on the highways....they did away with the tiny reflective beads due to the slipperiness of the glass beads....i used to deliver those to a highway marking company in MASS...Franklin i think....

maybe road and bridge crews that actually inspect the bridges and make repairs LONG BEFORE they are closed due to rotted out beams

maybe actually putting the diesel fuel tax to the highway fund for actual repairs to the highways instead of using that money to build bike paths across america...

maybe spending money on de-icing the highways instead of spending money on pay raises for the political appointed commissioners.....

That one is actually a pretty good idea, and thanks everyone so far for the ideas. I am hoping to find at least a couple people coming to a general idea that could be pursued as soon as possible. I have the financial backing that could actually get something started. So please keep the ideas coming would like to get something positive going for the transportation industry.

Are these the square bumps on the lane markers in California? I would think that there would have to be some sort of paint that is more reflective but it would cost a fortune to paint all the interstates and highways with this.

I can't speak for everyone, but I have to have music with me while out on the road. I don't discriminate too much when it comes to music as I listen to almost everything. Music helps get me through traffic, keeps my mind off of things that anger me (such as the over-abundance of rude motorists), and helps make an 11 hour driving day seem like a walk in the park. Compact Discs or MP3 players, it doesn't matter.

Satellite radio is okay, but why pay for something that you could get for free? If you have a small laptop with a dvd tray, then I would bring some movies along. Or books. Whatever interests you.

One last thing that I would suggest IF your wallet it tight: purchase a pre-paid phone with an unlimited minute plan. I've had Virgin Mobile and Straight Talk before I went back to Tmobile. Even though the phones aren't flashy, fifty bucks is a great deal to talk as long as you want. Just don't forget the 12V phone charger and a hands-free headset.
