I have a truck that shuts off after 5 minutes if the truck doesn't move. Tapping the gas doesn't reset the timer. I have to move 2-3mph. Let's say there's a bad accident and I'm in standstill traffic and can't move. The truck will shut off. How would I keep from rolling backwards without setting my brakes? If I hold the brakes with the engine off it'll eventually deplete the air since the compressor isn't running. Setting tractor brakes and putting in neutral on a steep hill with a heavy load doesn't feel right

Holding the pedal should NOT deplete your air supply. If it does you have a leak. It's a closed system basically, when you apply brake pedal to fills brake chamber. Should hold pressure.
I'd just set the brakes after 5 minutes

Try your hand brake, our trucks auto shutoff also. We can hit the accelerator or pull the hand brake for a second. Some of our trucks tapping the accelerator doesnt work and you have to put your foot in it for a second.

If i was in standstill traffic for a extended amount of time. Id just set the brakes, hazards on and pull hand brakes when truck tries to shutdown. Or just shut the truck off if i didnt need heat or air conditioning.

You're not going to deplete the air. Once you fill up the chambers that's it, nowhere else for the air to go.

Unless of course you have a major air leak, in which case the park brakes would automatically apply once the pressure gets low enough.

Modern air brakes have so many failsafes built in that its extremely rare to have a total brake system failure.

I see. Thanks, I swear I saw my air pressure drop a bit while in traffic one time so it must've just been an airleak in the past. Good to finally have clarification on that

If you let off at all and re-apply the brakes, you'll lose a little bit of air, but shouldn't be an issue. Even if you did start to get low, just restart the truck. It should fill up before it cuts off again. If I'm sitting for more than 5 minutes though, I go ahead pop the parking brakes.

I'd say talk to the company about this. If the truck has no brakes set it shouldn't shut off. Tell them it's a safety hazard.

It’s pretty common. All the Schneider trucks shut off without brakes set as well.

Or maybe you had been pumping the brakes, even slightly.
Pushing down and letting up will cause air to drain.

You could always ask them what's cheaper, a gallon of diesel or a starter.
