I've had a truck that would shut down after 3 minutes no matter what. No combination of setting trailer or tractor brakes, varying RPM, setting cruise, OR ANYTHING ELSE that worked on every other truck I ever drove would prevent it from shutting off after 3 minutes if there was no movement. If I was stopped in traffic or a traffic light for 3 minutes the engine shut down. I just restarted the engine. The key is to not panic and not feel like you are responsible for all the smartphone worshipping drivers behind you.
If you are stopped in the road due to a traffic accident, pop your brake valves. I don't see any benefit to holding the brake pedal while you are not going anywhere for a long time. Your truck may leak air and you can restart the engine and build air pressure to the cutoff maximum if you want to be prepared to rol the INSTANT your lane can move 6 inches. If I set my brakes on a steep hill I WOULD NOT LEAVE IT IN NEUTRAL. Set your brakes, leave it in gear, and turn off the engine. Use your 4-ways if you hink that somehow helps anything. If you are not at the end of the line of traffic I see zero reason to have your 4-ways flashing until the fire dept washes the body parts off the road ahead.
