idling question

Most Carriers offer an incentive bonus usually tied in with safety and compliance as well as idle time and "over speed" (a set speed the company wants drivers to stay below). The bonus may be a monthy 1 of .01 to .02 cpm IF you meet all the criteria. As for firing a driver for too much idle time; I have never heard of a company doing this.
Many municipalities have passed anti idling laws under the guise of "clean air" but in reality it is more about revenue than clean air. Even so they have parameters built into these idle laws. Many will allow idling if the temp is below 32 or above 90 or if the driver is actually sleeping in the truck.
It will vary from state to state as far as enforcement goes. Many companies are installing apu's to eliminate idling and others are using IDLE-AIR.
My advice is to idle the truck if you need to, to get a quality nights rest if the temp is too hot or too cold. If you get a citation fight it. Do not pay for any ticket without at least consulting an attorney first.

 

And company that is chicken s*** enough to ticket/fine you for idling your truck to get a good nights sleep doesn't deserve to have any drivers. There are 2 in our truck so we idle about every night. If the temp is right we will shut it off and kick open the vents. But we also have a cooler full of food. But to save on costs we use Idle Air. We want an apu but just can't afford it yet.

Yeah. if you decide to drive, find a company that isn't that way and if they try to fine you for it....fight it. You getting a good nights sleep and not being a hazard on the road is more important. It's easy for the person in the office to talk crap to you about it cuz it isn't them in the hot box/freezer trying to get sleep.

 

There are several companies that limit their truck idling based on the temperature. One I know of the truck will not idle between 50 and 70. So the cooler of food cannot be kept cool.
