If an overpass is listed at a certain height, is there a few inches of headway?

171st between Center and Wood. It's East Hazel Crest, I believe, but the yard is called Markham Yard.

It's intermodal and automotive now, it was piggybacks way back then.

If it says 13”6’ perfectly and the road looks recently paved I wouldn’t chance it.

I used to have a directory which gave actual heights, and then there is the qualifier "Exactly". There were places marked 13'2" with regular height trucks going through all day. These were truck detours when they were reworking the Ryan. 13'5' Exactly, I drop the air and creep under, though. Lake Street downtown is scary, but doable and Western south of the Stevenson has something similar. Detours are a pain. As are signs at corners with T intersections(Cermak anyone?).

If you look closely, you'll sometimes see a lower marking on a vertical face just past the current one you are supposed to go by.

The worst place to go was the UP yard on 63rd. I think you could only get under on 43rd and had to go 20 blocks down State to 63rd. At night, I wouldn't even stop at the stoplights. Some container yards along Ashland were pretty tense too. I had a low 5th wheel and 22.5's and the rail cans had 10x20's, so I could make a 13'4". I got news for you, no place for that Pete in my avatar with no p/s. A low bridge map was the 1st thing I got. Met some great folks in the Windy, fo sho!

We had one get opened up badly that was coming for me to relay, and had to be reloaded.

This happened on 20 in or near Gary, somewhere, I'm not sure where. I never saw it, the other trailer had to be directed to the yard where it was off loaded.

Davenport has a Jim Hawk dealership and another place along 80 where you can see trailers topped by trestles. If you look, you can sometimes see trailers near the elevated roadways and other unused spaces in Chicagoland.

There is no answer to this other than maybe.. There are far too many variables at play but yes in my experience bridges that are in the 13ft mark tend to have that tiny bit extra of leeyway but I still drive slow as hell until I know for sure..

Had the misfortune of having to find out yesterday.
Was somewhere in Elizabeth NJ and my gps screwed up and sent me down a road with a split. Was supposed to turn left but it was gated and the other side had a 10' 3" bridge. No where to turn and traffic built up behind me.
I was 10' 9" with an inop with a missing wheel on the highest point of the trailer. Would have unstrapped and moved it to the lower part of the trailer otherwise. Inched through as close to the sidewalk as I could. Passed 99% of the bridge and took the air out of the front tires of the inop to make it through that last beam by less than a quarter inch. That bridge was 10' 8.5" so almost a half foot higher than posted.

Hope to never have to do that ever again.
