I agree on the common sense part. But we all know that common sense is far from common these days. Do you think that everyone coming here and asking questions has common sense? I've said for years now that the testing for a CDL should start with a 20 question 100% common sense test. If one fails it, they should be barred from getting a CDL for life.
And as for teenagers in drivers ed, the instructors are getting paid regardless of what the students learn or do in the class. My son has very little memory of anything that went on in class. He admits that he spent most of the time watching youtube on his cell. While others were doing pretty much the same. Then he b_itched when he failed the written part twice.
If I get a place to practice backing should I get a CDL with no school?

The misinformation in this thread is unreal. -
90% of drivers today have been to school and have extensive time with a trainer, and yet I see nothing but tailgating and speeding. What did they learn......not much.
Now, with the pretrips and HOS rules today, I would say though that some help is needed. You will undoubtably have more choices with a school just because of the insurance fiascal.
Use your head along with schooling and treat every mile as it may be your last or prison may be next. Fear having a fatal and remember, no....load has to be there.
I know at least 4 guys that each have over 40 years driving experience and are still at it and never went to school, but they are born truckers with a lot of common sense. They must be closing in on 5 million miles.okiedokie Thanks this. -

You don't have to drive 40 years to act like a +4 million miler. No your not going to maneuver a truck like one of them. But as a 4 million miler, when I see a driver operating his truck properly. I think to myself there's a top hand. Even if he's 25 yrs old pulling a dry van for Swift. Show the other drivers you have respect and you will be treated by the old hands with respect and an okiedokie.

Talked to a guy hired today. He had to go back to a CDL school even though he obtained his being self taught through a friend and his truck. Only company that would touch him was C.E..
