I'd do what any friendly truck driver would do these days:

Fire up my smart phone and record the guy failing to dock for 30 minutes so I could put it up on youtube. No sense in helping someone when I can shame them on the interweb instead...

I'm kidding. I wouldn't mind lending a hand if need be.

When I was OTR, I was having a spot of trouble getting backed into a spot at a truck stop in the wee hours of the morning. I was tired as hell and for some reason just couldn't get my eyes and hands to coordinate properly to get backed in. Another driver walked up and asked if I needed a hand. I said "sure, would you mind spotting for me, I just want to get backed in and go to sleep". So, the guy spotted for me which in that moment made getting backed in worlds easier. Thanked him and got my sorry butt into the sleeper.

I would if it meant the difference between ME getting into my dock in a timely manner, or not ... or if it was my fender in danger. The time and wages lost due to torn up equipment is much more likely and costly then the risk of me hitting something with his truck.

No because of lawsuits unless it is a driver from the same company as me

And let's be honest. Some of us here probably should NOT be backing in someone else's equipment ... just sayin'. I have a "professional backers certificate" so I'm authorized.

I have had people offer to back my stuff in. I tell them no but I will listen to have them walk me thru it because 1) insurance and if I wreck it that's bad enough, you wreck it im screwed 2) pride 3) how else am I gonna learn??? If I am having issues I'll get to a point where I'll let others by as not to hold them up

I understand the pride thing ... but all the pride in the world won't mean nothing if in their frustration, their foot slips off the clutch at a bad time/place and they break off the front 1/4 of someone else's Volvo while the driver is still in the probationary status, and subsequently loses their job with little hope of getting another.

Only way I would back up another truck is if the driver drove for the same company as me.Because companies have policies in place and it could mean an automatic termination if you get caught having an outsider back your trk.But I would walk him thru it.

That's funny and probably true in many cases.

Some interesting responses and this one question shows the general consensus of this country. Any mistake has consequences. Does that mean you turn your back on your neighbor? The self rewards of helping someone far outweighs any problem that might arise. What comes around, goes around. If you want help in some situation you have to be willing to help someone else. I have confidence enough to get 'er done. Otherwise I'd say no.

I could see asking someone that is just as bad as you. Now that would be hilarious. What did I do? :)

I respect the Amish culture for their helping ways. If your house or barn burns down the whole community comes together and rebuilds in a few days. Is anyone scared of the results of being hurt or some lawsuit? No! I say screw the lawyers and insurance companies. Do what's morally correct.
