I'm in this boat. I don't mind helping out a fellow driver and especially don't mind if it means I get to keep my hood and fenders intact or get into my assigned dock faster. On my last load I unhooked from my trailer to give another guy some extra room to get to his dock rather than make him come at it blindside. It took all of a few minutes to unhook and rehook, he thought I was a nice guy and I quit sweating that he was going to hit my truck!

Exactly....we've let lawyers & politicians take away our most important tool.....our compassion for another human being....sooner or later...you're gonna have a day that you'll need some help , maybe not backing into a dock , but for any other reason under the sun , maybe just maybe you'll have a person willing to give you some help , or a ride ,or a phone call....or just whatever. Doing what's right...can't ever be wrong....BTW...yes , I would help a hand out , or even back his/her truck into a tough dock , if he /she asked me to help.

if i was waiting to get into that dock next yes, if i was at some other dock and had the time would help him or her back themselves into the dock. that is the only way they are going to learn by doing it themselves. b safe out there

That's the problem. a lot of company's will put anyone in a truck. Backing is a part of driving if they can't do it then they need to change professions.

No. The reason I won't do it is not because of potential law suits or because I want to record the guy or gal taking half an hour to back up or even watch them hit something so I can laugh about it and record it and post it for others to mock as well...I'm not mean. The reason is simply this...you need to learn backing and the only way you will learn is if you do it constantly. If someone else backs up your truck than you never learning how to do it properly. There are people out there that beg others to help them and never learn how to back...you spot them easily in truck stops because they are the ones that always pull forward into a parking space instead of backing into it because they don't know how to do it properly.

The key to successful backing is practice, practice, practice. After you back up a few thousand times doing something like a blind side 90 degree back between two trailers isn't hard to do...yeah it seems impossible at first but once you get enough practice in it you just get use to it and it will no longer be hard to do.

I will help talk someone through backing but I won't ever do it for them.

Some gal in a Stevens Transport rig offered me $10 bucks not too long ago to back in off the street at a place in Queens. I told her no but I'll spot you. She got it eventually...only way you're gonna learn.

I agree that they have to learn, but, after watching a lady JB driver work on hitting a dock for 40 minutes and needing to get my load delivered I offered to back it in for her. She accepted the help immediately.

On the other side I have coached plenty of guys into a dock instead of doing it for them. Everyone else is correct, you have to learn. More recently I was super tired and in a very tight Pilot and was having trouble hitting the only hole in the lot when a fellow driver walked up and and said I'm gonna spot you. I was grateful that he offered to watch the blind side for me. Last thing any of us need is a preventable for backing in a truck stop.

I think it is karma, you get what you give and one day things come back to you. We have all forgotten the golden rule...

There's been a few times ive asked drivers to help or spot me some have offered to back it for me but I said no for 2 reasons,1,how am I gonna learn if someone else does it for me and 2,its against company policy.Ispoke with a werner driver yrs back who was sitting at the Omaha term at the picnic table looking worried.I sat down and talked to him,he was worried he would get fired because he let someone back his trk and that driver hit another trk.
