Ok new drivers,,If you are a rookie if you go to work for a mega carrier over the road,,expect slave wages and junk trucks,

Best advise look for a local company class A or B ,,get a year or two driving with safe miles,,

Apply for companies that DO NOT advertise in the magazines,, Look for companies that haul their own products (private carriers)
    Get some miles,
Mega carriers that haul general freight will never pay good wages.
If you run long haul it will cost you $20 or more per day just to feed your self on the road..Work local,,Pepsi,,Coca Cola..Sysco, even propane or heating oil delivery will pay $25/hr..

Over the road means 70 hr/week and companies that don't give a crap about you,, OTR means you can't take pictures along the way and when your are trying to sleep,,the banging on your door is just an other drugged out ##### who wants to be your friend for $20..
In the long run working local will be better in the end. Long haul only pays if you haul speciality freightll Stay working at your loacal 7-11.
Oh! Oh! don't get suckered into a lease purchase deal unless it pays $2/mile or more and the truck they want to sell you cost less than $200/week and has less than 100,000 miles, Evan then don't do it..

While I agree somewhat,.. I'd like to know who is paying $25hr to drive for Pepsi or other local driving jobs?
I'd sell my truck and work locally for $25hr.

Where I am from Brooksville down to Bradenton,.. $10 - $12hr is typical for local driving positions. They will have you max out the legal hours you can drive. $500 - $650 a week is typical here.

I have to disagree with everything. I made good money at Swift, drove new trucks, and learned a lot more driving OTR than I would have if I started out as a local driver. Also had a lot of great experiences, went to interesting places, and met good people. I just started working for a semi-private local fuel company that pays by the hour and all I can say is that there's pros and cons to both. Maybe it's just me but I'm sitting here at home, on my day off, sort of missing the open road.

I disagree with it all. These guys who constantly beat the drum that "good companies don't advertise" is kinda bs. Lots of bad companies don't advertise. Most do to get the word out. Even Walmart. And even Tyson. You know who doesn't? Richard Petty racing. And there's a long line of people looking to drive a race car hauler.

On crap trucks? Most companies have newer equipment. Like brand new. CARB kinda made that happen.

Slave wages? Got me there. There are some real low paying companies out there- most of the ones who DON'T advertise. In the last few months, almost all of them have given significant pay raises. Gordon/Heartland, Swift, US Xpress, Transport America just to name a few.

I run long haul and make a really good living. I don't want for anything, trucking has taken good care of me in that department. Sometimes local gigs pay next to nothing.

Lease purchase is literally legalized wage theft. Don't fall for it.

And don't sell drugs in ferguson missouri. Apparently the op had an attack of stupid. He should be fine now.

Almost everything you're right on target but most mega carriers have very nice well maintained trucks.

the only problem is that the real drivers will end up as the OP says
all the holders of CDL's shouldnt all drive as the above post illustrates

Its scarey out there for new drivers.Did anyone come to his rescue or did he figure out for himself how to get out?Same thing happened to me when I first started and it was with Werner.Only my first load was a Hazmat load going to Canada.I went in the car side but it was early enough to get out before work started.I was plenty scared though. But you're right folks rather drive and haul nice equipment.Too bad they can't have both, nice trks and good pay.At least adequate.I had a brand spanken new Century, very nice and spacious but the pay had a lot to be desired.
