Ok and my argument as a human being only not a driver's point. It normally takes me 1-2 hours to wind down (really 3-4, but I am different) to sleep. Therefore I see the 1-2 hours being argued as a "rest break". I would say a minimum of
4 hours sleeper if proven to have slept (therefore if you was proven you was on the cell phone, computer etc then it would not count as a break in the court of law).
However lets say the shipper/consignee kept you 2 hours LONGER than you expected .and you relaxed in that time frame, maybe not slept but relaxed I say you should have part of that time to drive if you felt it was safe to continue to drive. Now the hard part is having the programs detect when you are loading/unloading, therefore I don't know the answer to that to back up the argument yet!
Most drivers get off track because of shippers/consignee's or getting their dispatch? Right? I am fishing from what drivers tell me?

Yes I would say that is what mostly causes it, could throw a few more in like traffic ext.. but will leave that out...
I can't speak for everybody but in the rare occasion I find myself sleepy it does not take very long for me to fall asleep. Usually 30-40 minutes and I am asleep, that would leave me with 1.25-1.5 left of a 2 hour nap and I do think most drivers will tell you, that is a decent little nap in order to get your eyes back open so you can be more alert.... Again this is me can't speak for everybody..
14 hours is fine with me
11 hours drive time is fine with me
Get held up at shipper/receiver (dispatcher slow in getting you a load
)ext.. would be nice to see a little flexibility here. (extend your 14)
But bringing safety into this, I still say there needs to be a min of a 2hour break/nap that can extend the 14.
I may only need to use this 2 times a year cause I really don't get sleepy.
I am concerned for some of the older drivers who may need this. -

The current rules are too inflexible, they assume everyone is able or willing to sleep like the chicken, and make no allowance for all of the problems that crop up in the real world, the rules are fairly decent for terminal to terminal type driving, but are not adequate for pick-up and delivery, live-haul,or peddle runs, to name a few; too many people and other things going on with those to work out well, for instance, if you run out of hours doing live-haul, do you take ten down before completing delivery, or do you log creatively?
The animals may not survive, and your employment may not survive if the critters aren't delivered when needed.
BTW, I truly loathe live-haul, but I get other runs to keep my present employment enjoyable enough to continue. I get home fairly often, and I get to see the people that are important to me on a regular basis.

But you can be lazy if you want as long as your Dispatcher is happy and you are happy right? -

What do you think is reasonable?
I am curious for ideas and something to think about if I am ever asked. I doubt I am but still gives us all something to think about and write out for everyone's opinion.

Ok logs, ya know I'm a newbie so on a scale of 1 to 100 my opinion counts 1/2.
But the drivers I've talked to and looking into my crystal ball, I can see shippers eating up the 14 hour rule with no way for the driver to recover what is truly dead time.
