Top bunk???
None of my last 4 trucks had them. But all of those were Internationals, so maybe that is why. international really likes it's mid-roof's. -
For the driver who knows he/she will never need a passengers seat...use a wide cab design like Western Star or Volvo and move the bed to run longitudinally from the dash to the rear of the cab. That will free up better than 24 square feet of floor space in the sleeper for storage, office space, kitchen area, etc.
Or of course you are the engineer...design a stow away bed that when put down in place goes in the passengers seat location to allow for more "useable" permanent space in the sleeper area. -
I agree, places to put essentials like a potty, refrig, micro, etc that they FIT. we have a brand new Freightliner and there's NO ROOM! have drivers list what they put on the truck (we like crackers or carrots handy for when you get that tired feeling) but our new truck doesnt seem to have enough spaces - we keep aspirins and aleve and pens etc above our head, and always end up having stuff fall out on us as we drive and try to take an aspirin. there's no where to put a fridge on our truck, the spaces dont conform, if you want to plug something in you have to go under the bottom bunk, and when you live in these trucks as we all do, we need things handy and easy to get to !
I think ALL semis should have a shower/toilet, especially for emergencies. there's too many times we have had to stop alongside the road, between truck stops, for an emergency (and embarrassing) restroom break. not too bad if its dark out, but man oh man dont let it happen in daylight! Live on a truck for a week or two, you will see what is needed. we use our upper bunk to store our bags, but things come flying off there if we stop quick for some moron who pulls in front of us. it's scary, dangerous, and if we had cabinet options up there (or a net or something) we'd use that, and not have things fly around the truck!) but THANK YOU for asking what we want and need, there's a smart person!!!! go to the source!!! -
Also them black organizers that hang on the seat are great. Just put it on the seat backwards and there are little pockets down the sides of the seat for pens and little stuff. Your Rand McNally fits good behind the seat too. Doesn't effect a passengers comfort either. -
Steve;
My best suggestion would be to make detailed notes on all the suggestions presented. Arrange them by some type of category and most important of all....... Ride with a trucker for AT LEAST two weeks.. preferably a month. Refer often to your notes. Make your own notes on your experiences.
Two different designs come to mind. One for husband/wife teams. No upper bunk, wider lower bunk (when both are not driving), cabinets/storage where upper bunk would have been, etc. One for teams that are not married, upper and lower bunks.
Both designs still need a bit larger sleeping area than most present day trucks have. Kenworth and Volvo both have promising designs that could be expanded on (Kenworth 86-inch Studio AeroCab Sleeper and Volvo VN series)
First hand experience equates with common sense and knowledge.
Good luck and thanks.

The trash from the previous driver. Slip seat. Ok for the most part but it never fails.... you sometimes get a truck with sunflower seeds all over the floor. Another thing is doing a treasure hunt for the dam compliance book with the registration, etc. in it. Always in a different place in different trucks. They should be locked up in their own compartment with a warning buzzer that goes off that's rigged to dispatch if you remove it ! Dirty windows is another problem with slip seat. Another problem is you turn the ignition on and get blasted out of your seat by the blaring radio that wasn't turned off and the wipers going at full blast at the same time. So I wised up and turned the radio down before I turned the key.

Mirrors that reduce glare from vehicles aproaching from behind. A small built in step to assist in washing the windshield. More/better seat back storage options. A load sensor system that would automatically adjust 5th wheel and/or slide tandems according to weight. Better sunvisors. Digital guages that are senseable enought to "know" when they need to be lit. For example a water temp., oil presure, voltmeter cluster that is only lit when they are out of driver set ranges. Better rearward lighting. Less nets, more doors on storage cubbies. Better insulation.
