If you HAD TO buy an emissions, pre-2013 truck, what would it be?

So maybe that's the loophole. A glider with a 2010 or newer engine that according to CARB from what I keep seeing and reading, doesnt need retrofitting or any sort of DPF or DEF system. I'll have to confirm!

All right, CARB has an updated regulation summary to make this 2010 engine and DPF stuff more clear:

So yeah, no loophole, you need a DPF regardless of the engine year. They just ALSO want a 2010 engine or newer eventually :biggrin_25510:

It's unbelievable how the state of CA gets away with this. The mega fleets can eat the cost but the small businessman can easily be put out of business. Another example of out-of-control government and the CARB enforcement is spotty at best right now. Just don't be the one who gets caught in violation. Every time I'm out there I look to see who's not in compliance and I would say at least half the trucks I see. I wish you luck, to me it's too risky to buy one of the newer emissions trucks.

I don't know if they can, but they said they wouldn't. Once you're caught the clock starts ticking.

I'm a 6th generation Californian (not many white folk can claim that), but CARB may be what finally makes me leave.

I think it's 12-31-2023. And I am firmly convinced that the date will be moved back, and also that better technology will be developed to make older trucks compliant.

It's also my understanding that numerous lawsuits are still pending against CARB about this. The more time you buy yourself, the greater the odds that the situation will change to one more favorable to us.

I may be in a bit better situation than you in that I'm base plated in OR. If I can get 5 years my SO will be able to get a decent retirement & says she doesn't care where we live.

I think my last 30 day average was 6.2. That's pulling a curtain van- I-5 & points west, mostly Bay Area & north. About the toughest situation for fuel mileage I can think of.

I will talk to my buddy & ask where he had his retrofit done, I know it was somewhere around Sacramento & I believe it was a dealer, not one of the retrofit specialists that have sprung up. He pulls for Williams Tank Lines & says several other O/O's there have done retrofits & been pleased, so he decided to follow suit.

Yeah it is risky. I'd prefer not to but don't have a choice now since a couple of the old trucks broke down. I feel like buying at least one pre-emissions truck for now. I just don't see them being able to 1/Enforce fully and quickly 2/Actually collect the fines

But its a gov agency, though they are slow they will eventually get the power they need for their madness. One of my colleagues was doing some research and supposedly at some point they won't allow you to renew either your DMV registration or some other baloney. I'm not upgrading everything until they really have that much power. I'll have to post a thread to see if anyone knows of ppl actually getting fined.

Yeah we are basically not upgrading unless the old equipment goes out for good. And thanks, I read recently that retrofitting is a 50/50 gamble but it will be considered for one of our old day cabs which is running problem free. If the resale value on that thing is really low, we might gamble with a retrofit on it. It would help avoid a purchase of a $70-80k truck.

haha yeah, CA finally had more ppl going out and leaving than ppl settling in but it was mainly the housing crash and cost of living. I don't think I'll ever leave though. I like to do it all (hobbies, events, sports) and of course there's the weather. We are not going to upgrade everything unless the old equipment just flat out needs replacement or CARB really twists our arm.
