About the miles, my first trip out this time was Dallas, TX to Buffalo, NY. That's about 1400 miles. Next trip was from Buffalo down to Laredo, TX. About 1800 miles. I made both trips inside 7 days, but didn't deliver in time to have both trips on the same paycheck. So, the $170 is only for trip 1.
Now I've driven from Laredo to Flint MI. More good miles. But, I can't deliver until they open Monday morning. So, next check will also be for just one trip.
I have been making some layover and shuttle pay and that's helped. But, I need bigger paychecks.
I understand it's just the way the trips are falling for now. But, it still doesn't feed my family.
If you had to start all over...

You didn't mention your mileage rate, but even at $0.25/mile a 1,400 mile trip should pay you $375. And if you could not get the 1,800 run delivered until the following Monday that would start your week with a $450 at the same $0.25/mile rate. You still have the rest of the week to make more money. It doesn't make sense that you would only have a $170 check with either of these runs, even if you could not do both in the same pay period.
Ranger70 Thanks this. -
Yeah, that's gross. But after my taxes and the money they take out for trucking school and insurance it goes way down. The rate is 25cpm.

You are under contract with them but are paying them for your schooling? I thought that you had a contract so that you could get your training without having to repay them. What would happen if you left before the end of your contract? How long must you pay them for your schooling?
-
Couldn't you just have taken a refresher course at a school, you do have some experience and I am assuming a cdl before you signed a contract with a company that will train you and make you pay them back and work for them for a year?????
-
I did have my class A CDL and there was no need for me to go back to school. The teachers ignored me once they knew I already had my CDL. I couldn't afford to pay for the refresher and every company wanted me to take the three weeks and sign the contract. Something about DOT regulations and having two years verifible experience.
But, none of that matters now. I'm stuck in this low paying gig until it gets better. My next check will be a little better and the one after that should be pretty good. I guess I'll make due. -
The DOT doesn't require any minimum amount of experience. Carrier's are required to verify the last 3 years of a driver's experience and have a 10 year work history, but neither must be as a driver. If someone doesn't have that much work experience then we must have a record of what you you were doing for the last 10 years, even if you were in school. Some carrier's require 2 or more years of verifiable driving experience due to their insurance, but it has nothing to do with DOT requirements.

I hate to have nothing but bad news. IMHO, if you break that contract you won't be able to get a driving job anywhere else.
They will trash your DAC and your credit report and turn you over for collection on the balance due for training. -
I wouldn't change a thing...

Well, I talked it over with Mrs. Scoundrel and although she doesn't like it, she sees the wisdom in sticking it out where I am. Also I sold the Harley chopper I've had for 30 years. I didn't get what's it's worth, but times are tough. Besides, it's just a hunk of metal. It doesn't love me back.
I'll just have to build another one.Jarhed1964 Thanks this.
