Hey guy's, first post on this site. I got my CDL in 2019 and drove for a few years. Due to being rear-ended and injured in my personal vehicle, I took a break from trucking and worked from home. Whatever you do, do not make this mistake if you ever want to use your CDL again. Due to ignorance, I forgot to self-certify and I remained certified as an interstate driver. Once my DOT medical card expired for a year, I lost my entire CDL. I recently only learned this when I wanted to start driving again. I thought I could just go get my DOT physical and would be good to go. But nope, I have to go back to trucking school and start the entire thing over again. Even though, if you get a DUI, you can still keep your license. Whatever you do, DO NOT let your DOT medical card expire, or forget to self-certify if you ever stop driving.Going to be a huge headache.
To add, this also depends on your state. So check your state regulations. Delaware is one of the states that takes your entire CDL. On the DMV website, it just says your license would be downgraded. It never said you lose your license, I thought the term downgraded means you do not have CDL privileges until you renew your med card. But I was wrong. Check to see what your states policy is here. https://www.fmcsa.dot.gov/sites/fmc...structions-submitting-med-certificate-wsc.pdf
If you plan to stop driving for awhile do not make the same mistake I did!

Consider it a blessing, my friend. I can't totally dis the industry, as your situation was brought on by yourself, but since you went this route, be a nice day in the Badger before I'd give this industry another dime. Before this Covid crap, truck driving was the only choice for many. Schools made a fortune off people that had no other choice of jobs, took their money, gave them false hopes, and half quit in the 1st 6 months,,money lost. Today, my little county newspaper, consistently has 3 pages of jobs, and trucking no longer is the only game in town. My advice, take it in the shorts, and get that hospital maintenance job, that pays twice as much, and 10 times the job security and chase the single nurses around. Construction is HUGE and my neighbor claims he makes $1800/week( before taxes) and all he bought was a GD hammer and never pees in a bottle. Just saying, don't "lower" yourself for this job, it's just not worth it today.

Where is your location; state & nearest city/town? Might be plenty of local jobs near you for a new cdl school grad.

Did they ever send you anything warning that your dot physical was expired?

Why do you have to go to a school? Just go retest and get your CDL back.
Might be a few hundred to rent a rig to test in, but a fair few schools will rent them for testing.
And no, you don't have to take any ELDT courses as you have had a CDL in the past. -
silverspur and tscottme Thank this.
