I tried calling around, nobody will let me just use their equipment to test. Plus I need to have a licensed CDL driver to accompany me to test. Trust me, I wish I could just do the test, I am rusty on my pretrip inspection test, but I am confident in my driving since I was solo and its only been a few years.
Trying to look around, if I went with a mega to get my CDL, I want to make sure it is in a manual transmission. When I learned with Prime inc, it was automatic. I really want to know how to drive stick, especially if my goal is local. Allot of companies local here still use manuals, and I don't want it limiting my career.

Many drivers go local right out of cdl school and do the entire career as a local driver. The myth is a new driver must pay dues by going OTR first; that's just a myth.
Just depends on what's available in your area. Friend of mine hated OTR and got a job with Waste Management and made $65G the first year.

I remember them sending me one thing saying my license would be downgraded if my medical card expired. However, they don't give any details at all about that. From my understanding, I thought it was just downgraded as in you do not have CDL privileges until you renew your DOT card. Just ignorance on my part, and an expensive, time-consuming mistake. I do wish they gave more details and said that you would be required to do all testing over again.
Yeah there is quite a few, like garbage trucks and things. I also wonder if I can use my previous driving experience to help me applying for jobs, even though its been a few years. My goal is 23-25$ an hour if I do local. Where I live, studio apartments are minimum 1200$ a month, I calculated my finances, and that pay range would have me comfortable and not living paycheck to paycheck. But I may do OTR for a bit anyway, as I want my hazmat endorsement and do tanker. And I do not think 23-25$ would be too unreasonable even for my lack of experience.

The driver I mentioned that fuels locomotives, at first wouldn't apply because the website had, "12 mos. experience required", so I told him to apply anyway. He did and was hired.

Where are you located that a studio apartment is $1200 monthly. That's a pretty common rent in most areas.

Thanks for the warning. You make a good point. Lots of drivers that stop driving think the only way to keep their CDL is to keep getting a new DOT medical card. You don't have to do that. Just change your self-cert to one of the categories that doesn't require any DOT medical exam. Also, if a driver has a HazMat endorsement and stops driving, go to the DMV and trade your current CDL for one without a HazMat. If you have a HazMat endorsement and you just let it get old and expire, you will likely have your CDL downgraded to a simple passenger car license. Several states have this procedure. I don't know if all states have this. Anyone with HazMat needs to find out if their state does this before your HM expires.
