Local utilities would spot rented MC 407 [they were 307's then] at the site of a lightening struck transformer and pump them full; bring in their special reconditioning machine and restore the dielectric properties and return the oil to the transformer. We would just bring and recover the empties...
That was recovered oil.
We transported Virgin transformer oil for Shell; the trailer needed to be 1000% dry. We started purging them with a N2 bottle leaving them with 2 - 3 pounds of pressure. Then we got a new air compressor with a desiccant dryer and got a wall mounted hydrometer with a probe and purged the trailers with dry compressed air to a dew point of minus 60 or 70 and we were good to go, no rejections and no danger of anyone sticking their head down into a 100% N2 atmosphere.....
Further back The Exxon lube rack in Bayonne took 4 hours to lab sample virgin transformer oil. arrived at the consignee who took a beaker full, stuck in two electrodes and turned up the juice until it arced and as long as it was more than his minimum it was good to offload......
