If you wanted to make the most money as a rookie ...

Are they hiring noobs up there? I've got a couple phone numbers, might try calling them tomorrow.

 

I would say in order to make the most you should decide on the type of work you want to do such as Dry van, Reefer, Flatbed or oilfield driving. Then I'd see where you'd like to run or work the most. Then i'd pursue whatever you decide.

 

I'd beat on the doors of the ltl carriers and start @ the bottom with a broom in my hand and work my way up to a position on the dock and then a driving position. You'd retire in 25 years with MORE money than you ever will get out of running OTR for the average coolie tl carriers.

I agree. One of my friends had to leave the city for his job where he is stressed out working 12 hours per day with no life. Yeah sure he makes good money though in exchange for his life. No thanks, I rather have a middle class life and have some happiness.

 

Anyone with a pulse and a CDL can get a job in North Dakota right now. You have to be willing to endure the winter, work a #### load of hours, and be away from home for several weeks at a time. If you can do that, then YES, there is a lot of money to be made in North Dakota. You can expect to make $60,000 to $75,000 your first year. Good luck bud!

 

If money is the primary concern, I would choose a company that offers the best working environment. A few more pennies per mile now does not necessarily mean more money in the long run OF life.

I say this because if you are generally happy with your employer you will do a better job thus, more money by not having to job hop. To me - money is about where you would like to be 5, 10, 15 and 20 years from now?

I think we all know somebody who "had" a high paying job and quit because they could no longer take the BS that came with it. Life has a way of throwing a monkey wrench at us. For example, what if you get married, divorced, have children or become sick and you must get off the road?

Now that you can no longer work on the road, will the same high paying per mile company let you become an in-house trainer, broker, DM, FM or work your way to the top as an executive staff member?

 

You begin by asking people that make alot of money.

Basically, the oilfield.

A rookie driver with zero experience can land a job making 40-60k working in the oil field right now. There us some guys making 60-100k hauling crude in the oilfield.

Anyhow, check out my Rookie heads to the oilfield to haul fuel thread. I had absolutely zero experience with hauling anything or diesels period before I started.

 

To an LTL company. And yes, many of them do hire rookies, regardless of what the people on here say.
