    As far as being an owner operator goes, it all depends on the freight you run. If the company you are leased to is mainly OTR, then you will be an OTR driver. If you lease to a company that has regional or daily work, then yes you can get the hometime, but in most cases your income will decrease substantially. I am home quite often, run about 7,000 miles per month, have a paid for truck and my trailer will be paid for in a week. I'm leased to Landstar currently, but worked harder with my own authority and ran many more miles. Landstar is a self-dispatch percentage-pay company, meaning you don't answer to anyone and have to choose your loads wisely. I take Jan and Feb off usually, and simply submit my logs and don't tell anyone as there is no one to tell. I have worked my way into this position by being more than a typical truck driver, and I still go out on the road for a couple weeks when that "can't believe it's true" load presents itself or times are super slow down here. I am the exception to the rule for FL drivers and I know it.

    Now if you are considering doing a lease purchase deal to think you'll have more control, the opposite will be true. You'll be home way less as every time you take off you go in the hole, and have to dig yourself out. In a huge majority of those deals, the pay is by the mile, so the only way to dig yourself out is to run more miles, which in turn drives up your costs.

    Good luck, but usually being an o/o, especially one with a truck payment, means less time at home.
