If you have time and proper records, I’d amend it now, and explain if needed.

I meant I’d amend it now, and explain if asked at the audit. They audited me, through telephone and e mail. Only wanted 1 qtr.

IFTA doesn’t mess around you will pay what’s owed they are hard to work with. They make the IRS look like children.I’m sure you will work it out .But going forward keep good records and file on time.if you don’t have a good understanding of reporting your fuel taxes it worth finding a company that does it for you it’s usually a pretty cheap cost

Of course every auditor and state is different, but my auditor was very understanding. I had some mistakes, but they were honest mistakes. I did get the feeling that if they thought you were trying to pull something the attitude would change.

Be honest about it and you’ll likely avoid fines. You will have to back pay (with interest) any tax money owed. If you don’t have good fuel and travel records they will charge you for any miles not accounted for.

It’s your home state. International Fuel Tax Agreement, all the states got together and agreed to help each other collect fuel taxes. It’s usually the commercial vehicle licensing department of your state. Each state agrees to audit a percentages of IFTA license holders each year.

    Tennessee.
I got audited once, and I had some mistakes, but they could see they were honest mistakes and just told me how to keep it from happening again. After all the smoke cleared they actually owed me $5. lol
It just depends on what they find. If you under reported a low tax state and over reported a high tax state, that can work in your favor and give you credit. If you don’t have any records at all though, they could very well charge you the compete tax rate, meaning you will essentially pay fuel taxes twice, plus interest. I would try to reproduce some of the records you can, but be careful, if everything doesn’t match up they will be able to tell you reproduced them and will think you are being shady.
