We just bought our first truck and don't anticipate getting it on the road until January. We don't even have a trailer yet. The only possible use I see before year end is maybe going to pickup whatever trailer we buy.

I have the DOT number, UCR, MC # all that jazz under way but have not registered the truck yet. Does the IFTA/IRP run for 12 months like normal registrations or is it Jan-Dec (i.e. each year)?

Just wondering if it is going to open up a can of worms of paperwork for me if I register it now vs waiting until after the first of the year.

You have to get truck insurance before any of that IRP IFTA.
Truck insurance company will send info to FMCSA called MCS150 form I think. Once that info is in file, DMV will issue plates after $1500 payment for IRP.

IFTA runs on a calender year. Depending on the state, some will prorate the IRP based upon when it is normally renewed. In my state, my IRP no longer renews on the calender year, as was the case at one time. You need to check with your state when you apply. The cost of your IRP will vary from state to state. Changes were made about a year ago. My base plate or IRP dropped from $2,200 to about $1,300. The price will be different from year to year. Fees are based upon how many miles you run in each state. They are estimated the first year. The MCS 150 has nothing to do with your truck insurance. It is basically an update on how many vehicles you operate, number of miles driven and type of freight hauled. It is mandatory to update at least bi annually (every two years). My state requires we update each year within 6 months from your IRP renewal. I would wait until you are ready to start running before applying for your IFTA and IRP. By the way the UCR must be paid each year. UCR, IRP and IFTA all run for 12 months (normally). There is no charge for your IFTA account in most states. You will also need a receipt where your 2290 (HUT) has been paid. That is another reason to wait since it is prorated by the month. Your insurance and authority must be active when you apply for your IRP and IFTA.

Thanks for the reply. I have the UCR done already and just updated my 150.

I will check on Monday with the dmv regarding the calendar year thing on the IRP. 90% of my miles will be in my home state of Texas but I may venture into 2-3 others. I thought of just avoiding IFTA / IRP and doing trip and fuel permits but it gets very costly.

Mainly I bought my truck to haul my own equipment to jobsites we go to for a couple of weeks at a time. We haul equipment there and then the truck is parked until we are done and ready to drive home. The thing with permits is they are mostly good for three days so I would have to buy them twice for each job. I called jj Keller and for me to go to Kansas which would require going through Oklahoma and staying there two weeks and coming back home would be over $500 in permits. Might as well do the IFTA / IRP and be done with it.

I did call the DPS license and weights guys today and ask them about what I could do on my 30 day temp tag I got from when I bought my truck in Missouri. They said I could do pretty much anything I want just to be aware that I can't pull a token trailer so any trailer I pull I need to get a seperate temp registration for.

The extent of my driving between now and Jan one will just be running around doing some mods to the truck, and getting a trailer. I will just do that on the temp tag and then register it come Jan 1 I think.
