My brothers International with Ultrashift has about 500,000 miles on it and sometimes the ignition switch will not turn on the starter to crank the engine.

It only happens about once every 25 times you go to start the engine.

Wondering if this is a common problem? And if this is really the ignition switch or some other electronic issue....the N appears on the shifter like it is supposed to all the time, so it seems like it must be the ignition switch.

Should we just go ahead and replace the switch and see if that fixes it?

    Thanks.

intermittent no crank is more often the starter causing the problem.

Starters are now of the positive engagement type. This means the teeth between the ring gear and starter pinion have to be in full mesh before the starter will crank. If the pinion gear slides out and two teeth butt up to each other between the pinion and ring gear and prevent full proper mesh it will not crank. What happens is as you key off the pinion gear is retracted by spring force back into the starter and turns slightly so the next attempt should be in full mesh and able to crank. If you are experience this once in about 25, I would say there is no problem.
