Is it unrealistic to hope to be home for Christmas as a new driver who would potentially be starting training in early October (company sponsored) ? I realize Thanksgiving will most likely be out, but man this is the one day out of the year that is really important to me. (of course I know I'll definitely be able to be off for verterans day, flag day, my birthday, MLK day etc). I know no one can speculate on my specific employment situation but it would be really helpful to get a feel for how many make it home, and what your experiences have been!
Thanks as always.
I'll be home for Christmas..?

Two holidays that they get us in for is Christmas and Thanksgiving.

what i do to Guarantee to be off for Christmas is right around the end of September i send n my home time request for Christmas the computers at USX keep track of it then i just remind my dispatcher 2 weeks b4 my home time starts then 3 times the week i go home just so that he doesn't forget, haven't missed a Christmas yet unless i choose to stay out, same thing with thanksgiving, but one of the key things to do is build a re pore with your dispatcher communication is key and they will be willing to work with you more,

I recommend that you find a company that gives you those days off as a courtesy or by contract. Where I work, we get 12 paid holidays off. Although I work local, it does not diminish the fact that we have VERY important family members who count on us being there. Who would want to miss those special times? I know I don't.
