Long story short. Illinois wont let me renew my plate because my DOT number is inactive. When ive applied do get it reactivated DOT refused because i dont have a MC number. And getting MC number takes too long to get my plate renewed in time. Since im leased, i needed DOT number for plate only. I think few year ago ive got an letter saying that since its used for registration, it will became inactive. Anybody remember getting that letter. Was i supposed to do something? And how come ive got DOT number without having MC number, but now i need it to reacivate it. And most important is the a way to get MC number faster? Somebody straighten me up, please.

Real Simple- if you are under a lease (leased on to an existing Carrier/cartage co) You still need your OWN personal DOT number- Now that Number can be in your personal name or DBA name- IRP will need to see the Lease also- You Will NOT Need an MC number- Nor will they issue you 1 while you are operating under a lease unless you decide to start your own Motor Carrier operation.

Since few years ago You need to use motor carrier DOT # to renew plates.
whoopNride and Cat sdp Thank this. -
So I guess it was DOT that gave me wrong info. -
I know in MS, if you are leased to another carrier you use their DOT number to get your plate. Used to have to have your own, but no longer required
bulldawg trucker Thanks this. -
Ok, I guess they changed the law then.........If that's the case,Why isn't Illinois renewing your plates then? only thing I can think of is the carrier your leased to has something going on with their DOT number?
mp4694330 and whoopNride Thank this. -

The rules changed a few years back. If you do not have authority or run exempt, your dot number no longer is used and is inactive. The registration only option no longer exists. Use your lease and carriers DOT number to get plates.

Update. I didnt need my DOT number to be active as long as I am leased to somebody else. And it took only 3 clerks to tell me that. i guess 3 is the charm. Now i wont get my registration in time. #### #### ######!!!
