Razororange, you are asking good questions. I really am at a loss as to how the tollway does not seem to collect OS/OW tolls. But still it is pretty obvious to me that they do NOT collect them based on how these people could not figure out the most routine things about my most plain vanilla loads like a 83,000 gross crane load or 96,000 lbs gross forklift load. One did not know what a quarterly permit was etc etc. And then I asked "the question" and got a pretty direct answer. This sort of thing has NOT been my usual experience with fees and such.

    My experience has been similar.

Got to keep in mind that the people in that booth don't really give a #### about your permit. The people who sign their checks do but don't care enough to properly train or enforce those rules.

I had once several years back where I went in at about 7:30PM to buy a permit. I filled out the paperwork and we got all the way to the pay $15 step. I had no cash on me. The person in the office didn't have access to a card reader at that time. She handed me a folded piece of blank paper and told me to wait 5 minutes before walking out with the paper visible in my hand. Told me to make sure I stopped at the next plaza on the way home to buy the permit. Wouldn't ya know it I didn't see another one.

NY thruway used to have little notepad sized books that we would carry with us and have all filled out when we got to the tollbooth so they'd only have to call for the "special haul number". Most of them appreciated that but some overzealous ones would tell us we weren't suppose to have them pads and take 'em away.

Massachusetts Turnpike would ALWAYS want cash for a permit. Even if you had one of their "credit cards" for paying the toll, permits were strictly cash. I used to joke with them and accuse them of having a slush fund, figuring they had a big clamsteam on the Cape every summer...
