I wanna get into truck driving, But I'm really lost. I live in NY and I have my Class B permit but It seems driving schools are too expensive. I really wanna get started I would like to get a decent truck driving job just so I can make some money for the next two or 4 years and then go to college, and also have it as something to rely on if anything.

I have no problem with the mental or physical requirements you truckers mention. I train vigorously as a boxer and I'm anti-social (no offense at all!!!)
My father is really pressuring me to do something, but he's not helping.. he's only holding me back and complaining at the same time.

There's really not much you can do, interstate-wise, until you're 21. You can drive in state only until then. I'd check communit colleges for inexpensive classes, then get a good local job.

Four years and then college? Sounds more like you'd be better off to enlist than to get into truck driving.

    Here's my advice...............

Invent a time machine then go back in time and have your daddy knock your momma up 2 years earlier............bada-bing your 21 and can actually get a job................maybe...............:biggrin_2559:

U will need at least 1 year OTR (maybe even 2 now) before 99.99% of local companies will look at you. maybe try hiring on as a dockworker with conway-freight (NOT CON-WAY TRUCKLOAD) or somedoby that has a truck driver apprentice position. i just saw one in career builder the other day.

Your going to have a very hard time. What schools don't tell you that most company's insurance won't insure you until the age of 21. It's that way here in Florida atleast. Unless you find a local company that will take you on, I doubt there is anything here for you. And by local, I suggest calling construction company's. Alot have dump trucks positions open for 18+. Once again atleast most did here in Florida.

my boss hired a 20 year old a while back but ended up having to pay an extra 2000 bucks for his insurance to cover him. These companies figure why not just hire a person thats old enough so they dont have to pay extra so they wind up hiring the older person that works best with their insurance plan! Alot of companies are going up to 23yoa! Good Luck, I was once there and I just couldnt wait until the big 2 1 came.

I was in the same boat....had my permit at 18 and let it go because it was just not worth the hassle knowing I could not be hired & insured until I was 21. 4 months after I turned 21 I was a licesnsed Class A driver with a job!

I got hired at 18 and the owner/op I drove for put me on his assigned risk insuruance policy. I NEVER paid a dime for it. He like the way I worked, he claims I was worth it. But I didn't realize the pay I was getting till much later. The checks were great but many hours invloved and I didn't care I just wanted to drive.
