You might check into the Acer brand of computer. They use most of the same internal components as the big name makers, so are just as reliable. You'll find the company offers a lower price to compensate for a less famous name, but if you compare $ to $ an Acer to a 'Big Name' you'll find the Acer is a MUCH better deal.
It's a bit late to respond to the original post, but I figured to drop my 2cents for anybody w/the same question.

I will be shopping soon in a bit. I am thinking more about durability issues.

If I had to get a new laptop today, I would choose a Panasonic Toughbook.

I had two laptops, the first was a Toshiba, and it went down twice under warranty, and I bought a business class HP while it was gone the second time.

The HP quit just about a month after the warranty ran out and my son has it but has been too busy to figure out why it quit.

The Toshiba quit again and has been replaced with a Lenovo IBM Thinkpad under a maintenance agreement.

I would get a Panasonic Toughbook, but the price is too high unless you go for refurbished.

My thinking is that you really shouldn't have the computer running while the truck is moving, because of jolts and vibration.

Acer has been mentioned and they are probably good deals for the money,
Dell makes a semi tough laptop but it is pricey.

I got a toshiba $950 after rebate. Love it. It has the 17 inch monitor. Graphics on movies could be a bit better but it's okay. Just a tip for you guys buying them. Mine has 1 gig of ram and if your has vista you may want to upgrade with another gig. Vista use ALOT of ram and slow things down. I almst loaded xp but decided to stay with vista.
Tshiba has had an issue with going blue screen. Mine did this twice when I first go tit but after I uninstalled all the JUNK that was loaded on it I have not had one problem. Personally I think it was that google toolbar thing.

Last month my Dell Inspiron of six years died on me. It was a good machine and did its part well.

I went and got a Toshiba. It kept giving me the blue screen of death. I was told it might be compatibility issues with the new Windows Vista. I took it back anyway and got a Sony Vaio. I'm happy with the Sony but Vista can go you know where.

Attention all Sprint wireless internet customers with a Pantech PX-500:

The Pantech card is not Vista compatible! You have to download the software for the drivers then configure a manual connection. It's a real hassle.

Before buying a new computer make sure your wireless card is Vista compatible. And the new HP's only have an "express" PCMCIA card slot which most wireless cards will not fit into so don't go there unless you want to buy an express card or a USB modem.
