    So, I've decided....now's the time!

I've posted a couple of times seeking advice and I've decided to take the plunge. Little worried...but I'm gonna follow the dream...what I should have done 20 years ago when I got out of the army..

Now all I have is a useless masters degree....criminal justice....which I love...but not like an engineering degree in terms of $$ (why i'm worried about getting hired on paper...afraid it might be hard), teach at community colleges part time, barely making a living and 100 grand in student loan debt. Made more money working at Kroger as a meat cutter when I was in college.

Of course I don't have the cash to pay for trucking school on my own (100 g's in debt) so who knows....looking at financing local schools here in Ohio or maybe one of the company sponsored ones. Wife's cool with it and my daughter is a senior now so its fine.

All I got ....venting. Much respect everyone. My cousin pulls flatbeds...been doing it for 25 years and loves it.

Any advice, thoughts, recommendations.....I'll take it all

A lot of trucking companies will reimburse you for your CDL school

Some companies have their own schools or are associated with accredited schools. Take your time, do your homework and make sure you have all your questions answered. No matter what school you choose, don't let yourself get pressured into anything. Learn at your own pace and hone the basic skills in school. As I always say, the schools give you the building blocks. It's up to you to assemble those blocks once you get driving for a carrier. Best of luck to you and don't hesitate to ask questions here. This is the best danged bunch of drivers you'll find assembled in one place anywhere. :)

Some community colleges teach truck driving. And maybe you could get a grant. Don't expect to earn much your first year. Could be $25-$30 first year. A new driver can probably tell you more about that.

Work on your endorsements; tanker/hazmat, TWIC, passport. That's where the money is. You might not land that job right out of the gate, but 12-18 months later you can. $60K - $65K per year easy money with tanker hazmat company.

Talk to Prime Inc. and ask if you can attend their CDL school & tanker school. They also have flatbed & refrigerated.
