Hi all this is my first post. Me and my brother are wanting to get into the trucking industry and i'm lost as to how we should go about it. Do you make more money working as a team or do you make essentially the same pay after you divide it between 2 people? I read articles offering jobs in the newspaper talking about be a team driver and earn 120K a year, is this lies and are they talking about 120K between 2 people so really 60K a piece? I hear a lot of people say they make no money in trucking like 30K or 40K a year. Is this because of the companies they work for or what? If you were just starting out and had a friend or relative(someone you trusted and knew was sanitary) that wanted to be a trucker also what is the best route to take to get the most work and pay between 2 people? Are we better off just working seperately or together? Should we forego looking at working for a big name company and get our own rig and be an owner operator or start out getting work through a local mom and pop type place, what would you do and what advice would you give us? Eventually we both want to be business partners on our own business but we think we could get some good work in as truckers for now and save money and see some of the country while we are younger we just don't know how we should get started. Thanks for your help and advice in advance.

the truck got paid $120,000 and the drivers split that.......but DO NOT fall for how much someone else earned 'last year"..........

a team works best for husband/wife as all the money goes to the same house. in your case, it may be the same house, but you two are individuals, that probably don't have a mortgage to pay like hubby and wifey do.

being business partners is ok........but each of you get separate lawyers and hash that out. even brothers can and will argue over money, how to run the business, etc. you should BOTH agree as to WHO RUNS the business, and the other don't involve himself further.

how to get started...........?? go to the same school, graduate, get your license, go to the same company, drive as team.............that was easy enough i thought.

Wow! That's like one of those "too good to be true thingy's" I bet the fine print is a mile long in that paperwork!

INTHELONGRUN, you definitely make more as a team even if you have to split the money because the truck covers more ground and your loads will be better. Companies like to keep teams busy so a lot of your loads will be drop and hook. I caution you though, this will be hard WORK! Their won't be everyday showering and resting at night at a truckstop. You WILL BE constantly moving! My wife and I teamed for seven years and I teamed with other people before that. It is going to take you a little while to get used to. These companies expect their teams to average a thousand miles a day. Stay away from buying or leasing for at least a year. Wait and see if you guys get along, how you like it and what its like working for who you work for. With that being said you are definitely in a good position to make some good money. If you have a family kiss them goodbye. You will not see them but a handful of times a year. This is all part of lifestyle! Lay down some rules between you and your brother as far as a business relationship and what you need to do when times get stressful. Good luck to you and feel free to ask any questions on this site. Welcome to the forum!
