I need to know what requirments are needed for pulling under 26k lbs. I'm trying to avoid getting my cdl right now until I get a few things taken care of.
Q.#1-- Do I need to carry insurance like you would on a trailer carring over 26k lbs?
Q.#2-- Is a 1 ton a good vehicle for pulling loads on a 20ft-28ft trailer and staying under 26k lbs "GVWR"?
Q.#3-- Is there good money in pulling/hauling loads under 26k lbs?
Q.#4-- Do I need a medical certification card for 26k lbs and under?
I will have more questions soon. I just need to know these first so I'm not getting myself in a hole. Thanks
I'm new into the hotshoting. Have many questions.

A 1 ton is a good vehicle for running under 26K . Many duallie owners are registered for 30,000 or more but that really isn't advisable .
There can be good money running under 26,000 lbs. You need to find a base customer supplying loads with this weight range . I know a hotshotter that started out running under 26,000 , bought a medium duty truck to get more loads , but then put his son in the truck under 26,000 . Some weeks the duallie makes more than the medium duty .
Not only do you need a medical card (required over 10,000 lbs. GVWR ) , you need a complete driver's file . You are your own employee . You will need an employment application showing past 10 years employment . You will have to make inquiries to employers from the last 3 years . Also required , copy of DOT long form physical , copy of MVR , proof of participation in a drug test pool and more . As I stated above , you need MC authority and all new carriers will get a mandatory audit .
Make sure the truck and trailer have a DOT inspection .
Don't even think of running without authority . Duallies with trailers are a favorite target of the DOT . There are also legal hotshotters that strongly resent illegals and will call and report a truck running down the road without DOT numbers .
Roadmedic made a good suggestion to google for more info . I just posted this so you'd get an idea why you need to do some research . -
If you are transporting goods for PAY, you will need a CDL the other things required for the rig (Truck and trailer) like any other commercial rig to be legal.
The other two posts were "Right on the money".
Attempting to "Shortcut" the process will do nothing but cause you grief WHEN you get caught running illegally............
Yes, money can be made hot shotting. But it is a tough road. Be sure that is what you want to do. It is not for the "Weekend warrior" if you expect to make a profit legally......
