Been OTR for the past year and it's been one of my favorite jobs so far. Besides sitting at docks for hours and missing family & the motorcycle, I've really enjoyed crossing the country. Told the family that I was going to push hard this year to gain experience and pay off bills.
Well, that year is up so I asked for more hometime. The company said they will try to get me home more often, maybe every other weekend. They are from my small hometown and a good company but found another company that I'm liking more.
It's Monday-Friday, some Saturdays. Home every night. Automatic daycabs. 50-60 hours each week. Holidays paid, vacation starts after 90 days. But no benefits.
I really can't pass over riding the motorcycle everyday and eating home cooked meals on a job that will pay me the same as if I was driving 2300-3000 miles a week right?
The wife is looking at the cost of adding me to her benefits (married 2 years but didn't want to screw up the step-kids insurance stuff at the time).
Iowa born and raised but driving through big cities hasn't fased me yet (actually headed to Long island now for the 5th time), but my blood pressure would thank me taking the new job lol
I'm not loco for going local am I?

I would be on that like a hobo on a ham samich!!................whats the local gig going to pay in comparison??
ncmickey, SingingWolf and Hawkeye212 Thank this. -
I’ve been local for about a year and a half and there are times I miss the road. There are things I wanted to do like pull Reefer otr and different things that I just haven’t done. But with a baby almost here, I think my girlfriend would kill me lol. I do love being home though.

What do you mean by pay in comparison? I've been in contact with them for a while now, but if my math is right with the overtime pay, I would gross at the local job as if I went OTR with the current one in the 2300-3000 miles (all depending on the hours I get locally)Texas_hwy_287 Thanks this. -
But I am after the Iowa cornfields won't replace the mountains lol.
Plus the wife and kids were looking forward to going on the road with me but guess they'll just have to look up from their phones when we go on tripsSingingWolf Thanks this. -
Family first. Take the local job. If it doesn't work out you can always go back to OTR.
Texas_hwy_287, SingingWolf, JReding and 2 others Thank this. -
That's what I was thinking too

Man I hear you, about the home cooked meals and the motorcycle and the wife. Like they say happy wife makes for a happy life. I've been thinking of going local myself but this otr has grown on me. Doesn't feel like it will be the same.
Got to look at life like a sacrifice. You never really win and you never get everything you want. Usually it's a trade , one thing for another.
I hope the new gig works well for you and if it don't, you already know otr will have there arms wide open for you.Scvready, Jfairley00 and Hawkeye212 Thank this. -
There is something nice about the routine I got into when running otr. I love Home, but I did good staying out longer. I appreciated Home a lot more also.
Hawkeye212 Thanks this.
