    They pay well enough. If I live in the truck for 3 weeks hauling as much freight as I can and avoid eating out, I should be able to afford a week off to spend with my kids. I only need to take home about $2k a month to do this.

    I don't have rent to pay. Just child support and misc. bills.

    Hopefully I can manage $2500 avg take home...that would be ideal, but $2k can work for awhile.

    I plan on being very aggresive while out on the road. Driving as much as the law allows. Buggin the hell out of dispatch for loads..ect.

    If for some reason, I can't make enough...I can look at switching to a 14 out and 2 days home program instead, but I'm going to try and avoid that.

    So why did you start this thread then? Was it not to ask for comments, help and advice?

    Did you only want the comments, help, and advice that you would like or agree with??

    I'm not the grammar police, nor do I expect anyone to write perfect english, but your grammar was off the charts. I just thought it would be helpful for you to know how ignorant it makes you look.

    The only people that will take you seriously are OTHER ignorant people.

    You probably think ignorant is an insult, for the record, it is not.
    Ignorant simply means to be uninformed.
    I am informing you, thus, you are no longer ignorant unless you choose to be. THAT...is something I can't help you with.

    Probably because he was looking for responses from drivers with..Experience?

    If you are thinking you are going to clear 2500 a month in three weeks AND take a week off..you are sadly mistaken..

    The norm is 1 day per every week out..you want a full week off..you gonna have to stay out 7 weeks..a lot of starter companies will come and get the truck if you don't adhere to that and charge you with abandonment of equipment on your DAC. If your recruiter told you otherwise you were lied to. Pure and simple...

    I will tell you your average will more than likely be 1800 net after three weeks..and going to a 2 week out/2 days off will only cut that even shorter..Now..out of that 1800 net..take your living expenses while on the truck out...at least 4 bucks a week laundry..20 a day in food..ten a day if you cooking for yourself..but there are going to be many times when that isn't practical and you have to grab fast food and you will be hungry so you are looking at 7 bucks a pop there..even a bottle of water costs a 1.50 nowadays..so unless you buying by the case there's another 7 bucks a day or 7 bucks every 3 days...and if you try to cut back on that you will end up sick, dehydrated, and laid up not making any money far from home.

    Dispatched miles for routing to the house won't match a week where you aren't trying to get home..dispatchers, knowing you are trying to get home may have to sit you for a day to get a load going in the right direction..

    By going to a 14 day rotation your dispatcher won't be able to run you as far from the house to get you back so you just shoot yourself in the foot.

    The longer you stay out at a time..the closer you will get to your goal..and a driver willing to stay out 4-5 weeks at a time is quickly going to have a happy dispatcher..less work for them..happy dispatcher..more miles..

    Sorry to burst your bubble..but there isn't an EXPERIENCED driver in the forum who won't agree.

    A driver has to stay healthy and it is possible to eat healthy on the road but it has to be a high energy healthy diet so you stay alert when you need to be alert. Being on the road for long periods of time there are going to be things foodwise that you could live with out at home but not on the road because you will have so few creature comforts and to keep from burning out don't deny yourself those things or you will very quickly end up quitting because your life on the truck will suck.
    On top of all of that is s the stress..and those little creature comforts go a long ways to cutting down stress..Think of yourself in heavy traffic before becoming a truck driver, in your own vehicle trying to get to work in rush hour..now take that rush hour and stretch it out for 10 or 11 hours..add to that the stress of bad directions to pick ups and deliveries, of dispatchers and logs, weather, and tight schedules..You are going to have to let off some steam and staying in the truck the whole time without buying a movie or books or games for the x box or whatever you do to relax is going to also add up.

    If you take home 1300 of that 1800 with all of that you will be doing good..

    Good advice...

    Schneider does have a program that offers 3 weeks out and 1 week home. One can even do 2 weeks out or 1 week out with 1 week home. It's called their Home Run program.

    You did make me look closer at the numbers. I saw will the $$ be tighter than I had originaly thought, BUT...still possible IF I can get the miles.

    If I can't get the miles, then I may have to look at staying out longer, another week or so when necessary. That's ok....I'm prepared to do whatever I have too.

    Making enough money trumps time home...that's priorty #1.

    I know the first year is going to be tough. After a year of raises and experience, it should be very possible. If I can't make it work after a year, then I'll start looking for something more local with better pay.

    I agree, a year and beyond you can do it..easily..but its not going to happen right off the bat.

    To all you new drivers out there, this is why its so important to really look at the companies you choose to drive for....what type of freight they haul, where they run and so on..

    Companies that run ALL 48 states are going to have a better mix of long and shorter loads..You'll quickly discover there's a rhythm to driving and its your own personal rhythm of when you get hungry, thirsty, etc..its a natural rhythm and its easier to let it ride on long runs with easier scheduling. ..You may not want a company that runs all 48 states..winter driving and inexperienced drivers sometimes don't mix.

    Will schneider be a good match for you? Time will tell and only you can decide that once you have driven for them for a while.

    After a year not only will there be other, better companies you can go t work for but they are a lot more honest in their recruiting and are certainly willing to work with you on your home time..They are a class above the "driver factories" and you will be better than a warm body in a seat to them.

    Right now, learn to be as efficient as you can with your hours..keep the left door closed, do what you can to avoid 34 hour restarts and keep after your DM to keep you loaded...

    My first time out..I waited till they asked me if I wanted to go home for a couple of days..and when I start driving again I'll do the same...I drive till I feel I start to feel that itch to get off the truck for a while..then ask for home time
