Im a new driver that just recieved his CDL. Im in a bit of a dilemma. I dont use drugs so I am not worried about testing for recreational drugs. However, in January I broke my foot and recieved a prescription to Vicodin. I never took any of them but the last couple of months I took them for a stiff neck over a period of time. Does anybody know if it will be okay to test positive for them even if I took them months later? I took about 20 in that time. Also is there a way to find out which companies do hair testing?
Important question about hair testing?

Search the forum. There are several threads on this subject. Most companies don't pay for the follicle tests. There's only a handful. And if you search, you will find which ones.

I took some vicodin for a root canal i had done and 2 days later took a piss test for my med card for trucking school and they never even called me or said anything about it. I wouldnt worry to much about it but i would keep the prescription bottle so if anyone has questions you can prove that it was your own prescription

Does Vicodin show up like that? I don't know if it would make a difference or not, I'm sure if it showed up, an explanation likely wouldn't be accepted. Just my paranoid negative opinion. Good luck.

Using it for something it's not perscribed for is going to be an issue if you test positive for it.

Op just have your prescription bottlejohnday Thanks this. -
I'm not sure Vicodin will show up in hair, but if it does and you had a valid prescription in your name for it, there won't be a problem. Even without the bottle itself the doc can verify they prescribed it.

Some of you are giving information that can get this guy in a lot of trouble or even fired if the wrong words are said. Like Meltom has said you can not just take an old prescription for any pain that comes along. Just because the doctor gave you Vicodin for a foot problem doesn't mean you can use it for other problems and self medicate.
The system is set up to work like this. You take a test (doesn't matter what kind) and if the test shows a positive result the testing lab is to notify your company. The company will remove a driver right then from any safety sensitive functions. After that the company has a Doctor or Medical Review Officer that pkays an indepentant review person known as what the feds like to call the "gatekeeper". The doctor or MRO calls you or sees you and asks if you have been prescribed any medication. You then tell him or her yes you have. You had a foot problem and you have the bottle of vicodin prescribed by doctor so and so. That will , or should, allow the MRO to provide to the company a report that will establish a legitimate medical explanation for a confirmed positive. If you tell them you took the medication for any other reason then you're on your own.
The collecting point or lab where you give your specimen is not authorized to write down on the (DOT) Federal Drug Testing Custody and Control Form (CCF) any medication you are taking. They say you can lit any medications on your copy but no one must see it. You can read what I've said here and draw your own conclusion in the FMCSR's part 40 subpart B,E,and G.shredfit1, maxwelltie, Meltom and 1 other person Thank this. -
Should the individual have a legitimate script, the MRO will then report the test as negative to the carrier.
The company doesn't know 'cept the results are taking a few days instead of 24 hrs. If the MRO fails to reach the driver he will contact the carrier to have them call...then you know there was a clinical positive but still have to wait for the MRO's report.
They will even go through this procedure for Weed even though there is no legitimate reason for use. -
