1977 International farm tractor, DT436 engine. Good news is that it's a good old simple diesel engine, won't be hard to rebuild. And I have the 462-page engine service manual.

Bad news is that it blew a head gasket, plus the oil cooler failed. Every oil passage is contaminated with water and vice versa, so I'm disassembling it minus removing the cam and crank. I don't have the luxury of removing the block and getting it hot tanked, so what are some ideas for cleaning it in frame?

I don't have the means of hauling a hot water pressure washer, otherwise I'd steam clean all those gallies and everywhere else. Solvents and brushes are all I can think of, so my idea was to get cases of ether and/or brake clean and spray into every oil and water passage, then spray some more. Get long nylon bristled brushes to scrub as far in as they'll reach. Lots of towels and rags. Any other ideas?

In the olden days when I was helping rebuilding engines with my cousin and friends, we used kerosene to clean engines.

I would not use brake cleaner or carb cleaner for the initial cleaning, kerosene is cheaper and easier to handle. Use the brake cleaner or carb cleaner if you need to to clean up the kerosene residue on surfaces that will be painted ot that where sealant is used,

Mineral spirits in a pressure can or garden sprayer. I agree no brake clean or ether. Harbor freight has some good assortments of nylon tube brushes.

After assembly use the cheapest yet appropriate oil along with recommended percentage of marvel mystery oil, put an hour on it and change oil and filters.

Good point about the kerosene. Didn't even think of that or mineral spirits. Thanks for the input.

The service manual has a very specific procedure for startup and engine run-in after the rebuild, but I don't mind using some Marvel if it'll help remove any remaining water where water shouldn't be. I'm worried I won't get it all cleaned out and something is going to fail the first time out.

Yeah I saw the tube and pipe brush set at Harbor Freight for six bucks. I also see a specific "engine cleaning brush set" online for $57. I don't mind spending money for this project, but that's a significant price difference!

Great idea. Looks like those guns could squirt enough pressure to flush out of the gallies. Just flood the block and keep flushing. I'll see if I can find one at a hardware store or something.
