I know that I am late with this, but a local radio station had a bit going about this yesterday morning, so here's mine... Laugh at me if you wish, but if you have an answer, please share it....

I was assigned a 2012 Volvo VLV670 (Cummins engine) and it has the engine brake power and strength on a lever to the right of the steering column with the lever adjusting the strength of the braking power and a switch on the end with the markings worn off to the point of barely legible.

How does one turn it on and know it is active or not?

If it's on you'll know it immediately once you're moving and you let off the pedal.

If nothing happens, move the switch. :)

All the way up should be the off position, all the way down should be the max position. Not sure if it's the same with the Cummins, but, on the lower left side of the digital display with the Volvo engine, it'll show the jake brake setting... (OFF) when it's off, (A) when it's on automatic mode, and (1), (2), or (3) for whichever setting... just fiddle with the lever for a bit, and look for something which changes on that display when you do it.
