I tried to talk him out of it but his mind is set I don't want to see him make a mistake I am not up on triaxle specs what's good and what's not he is looking at volvos and Mack's. Any advice on specs or direction would be appreciated

I'd advise getting a diagnostic done first. This will help "weed out" any hidden, non-disclosed or covered up issues with sensors, engine, tranny, etc. This is most often done by a dealer. You may want to try and find a mobile business that can do that. I'd make sure they have the equipment to hook up and the software is OEM. I do this service in CO, but I bet yourself and your friend aren't in CO.

Next, a proper and thorough mechanical inspection should be done (preferably at the same time).

Be wary of surprisingly low prices for these services if they're available in the area. Also ask if they at least have insurance that covers EVERYONE including the truck.

If you or your friend are able to get a mobile service, ask about any documentation that needs signed, if any. A reputable and trustworthy business that provides that service should have AT LEAST a permission, or legally referred to as a "release", or something similar.

    I wish your friend luck!!!

    earnies2 Thanks this.
