What I meant was if all the o/o's are striking, there will be a serious demand and I will be getting paid the big bucks to haul that freight.

Tx, The surcharge is totally independant of the fuel economy of the truck. Fuel surcharge would based on a predetermined scale and applied on the mileage of the load in addition to the linehaul rate. My truck gets between 6 and 7mpg depending on weight, weather and topography. My actual fuel cost at $4/gal is $.67/mi on the low end and $.57/mi on the high end of the truck's average fuel economy. Most freight brokerages pay a flat rate for loads and on their contract note that fuel surcharge is included in the flat rate.

The formula I talked about earlier would work like this. Lebanon Tn to New Caney Tx mileage 785 linehaul at $1.50/mile is $1177.50 plus $.63 per mile $494.55 total rate plus fuel surcharge $1672.05 or $2.13/mile. That would be the rate regardless of your truck's respective fuel economy.

While your statement is somewhat true, you are very ignorant to the reasons why your fellow MORE EXPERIENCED Owner Operators need help. You are apart of the "new age" truck driver, much like me, who is, was, and always will be spoiled. HOWEVER, those who have laid the ground work for us need our help and I frankly, need it too. 10 to 15 years ago, when you were still in High School, a load ANYWHERE paid over $2.00 a mile. Let's just use the example for argument sakes, $2.50. Now, here we are 15 years later and fuel is tripled or even quadrupled what it was back then and we are still getting $2.50 a mile. Yes, we have the fuel surcharge, but that is NOT there to replace what is lost, only there to help. So, yes, we need to adjust our cost of running a business, but we are just trying to fight what we are entitled to...higher rates or lower fuel prices. The fuel prices can go down. The powers that be just need to know who is boss. :biggrin_25525:

I'm still curious as to why you want to set such a low minimum wage? If there is a forced minimum shippers and brokers don't have any incentive to ever raise their rates.

Just like in the job market a forced minimum wage creates low wage jobs so it does in the trucking market.

Just saying no to cheap paying jobs or freight which ever the case may be will get the rates up to where they should be.

So what is a newb looking to get into the business to do? I noticed a couple comments that alluded to using force against company drivers for doing their job. I saw the couple posts that suggested running compliant to DOT rules and regs as a way of supporting the O/O's. I can agree with that, but what worries me is the fanatic that would resort to force because a company driver was trying to support his family. I want to believe that the drivers that think like this are in the minority, but when it comes to your life being on the line I tend to sway to the side of caution. I still have yet to start school and have alot to learn about the industry and am excited about changing careers, that was until I happened upon this thread. Would the experienced ones really take out their frustration on new guys trying to make a change in their lives?

Spoiled? No, I don't think so, I am smart enough to adjust my freight rate to cover my cost of operations. You are correct that we aint making crap compared to back in the day, which is why we NEED TO CHARGE MORE TO HAUL THAT FREIGHT!! I was smart enough not to sign a contract that didn't have a clause for rising expenses. We need to face reality here, fuel prices are NEVER GOING TO GO BACK DOWN! Go over to Europe and see waht they are paying, WAY MORE THAN US!! We need to focus on making sure our freight rates that we charge (YES WE, WE ARE THE o/os WE SHOULDN"T LET ANYONE TELL US WHAT TO CHARGE!)
