D.M.V. Response Combines High- and Low-Tech Tools

Following the March 12 bus accident in the Bronx that ultimately claimed 15 lives, New York State has stepped up efforts to catch commercial drivers using invalid licenses. Ophadell Williams, the driver of the bus, was reported to have multiple licenses, including a suspended one, at the time of the crash.

A New York State Department of Motor Vehicles sweep netted three drivers this week in possession of fraudulent licenses, including two bus drivers. A principal tool in the crackdown effort is the D.M.V.s facial recognition program, which evaluates the agencys database of drivers license photos and looks for facial matches filed under different names.

Since the facial recognition program was officially instituted in February 2010, the D.M.V. claims it has identified 2,700 possible cases of people with two or more identities, of which 450 have led to arrests. Of those, 80 were commercial drivers. Another 880 less serious infractions, like having an invalid license because of fines, were cleared through relatively uncomplicated administrative actions, either through collecting fines or suspending the right to drive on the duplicate license.
