This is what I am afraid of. I keep getting conflicting advice and information though....(no offense).
And that's why I started this thread.
Some guys estimate over and over and still pay less than $2k/yr for plates but then
you commented about adding a few states.
Adding 18 states and having your registration jump to $4400 is absolutely insane.....

I think you are confusing the terms. When they say "estimating", that is when you have no miles for the reporting period at all.
Once you have miles for a reporting period, those miles are used to determine what your base plate will be. If you are wanting to add a state that you have no miles in, some states call that "buying" a state. Those states go above and beyond your base state.
I have talked to drivers that do every trick in the book so that they can just keep estimating. It is getting harder and harder to do with more states using electronic reporting for IFTA. It is getting very easy to compare IFTA reporting to what you are putting down for base plates.Hanadarko Thanks this. -
The best thing to do is put the states on you want. And keep them.
If you drop them and go back to add them, then you will pay a higher rate for them.
That information was given to me directly from the state.
It's cheaper in the long run to pay for them on the IRP than it is to get trip permits or put them back on. When you sit and look at your form, there are amounts you multiply your mileages by. That's what determines what your IRP cost is per state. Unless it's states like NM, OR, KY, NY or another state that has separate registration of one form or another. -
GUYS.....thanks for all the replies. And yes, I do have miles to report to make my base plate up
but the rest will remain as estimated.
I ran the IRP estimator and here is what I discovered:
Starting out as a brand new carrier (no history)...all of the states (except Canada)...
all at estimated miles based in WI IRP = $1899.00
Remove California and it drops to only $1894.00
Now, I then added in miles I operated in the few states and left every other state at Estimate
and came up with an IRP new cost of $1450.
However, the IRP program I use to calculate fees (while very accurate) doesnt seem to know that these are 2nd year estimates. I used this program last year and it was within $20 of my bill.
I'm sending it in the mail today as-is and 100% factual. My miles match the IFTA for the same period.
I wont play any tricks, I just cant afford $4k for a plate.
I will post back what the damage is when I get the fax from Wisconsin.... -
If you have no miles in a state for a specific reporting period it will cost the same to keep that state on as it would if you where adding it. It is all based on the actual miles that you ran for the period. Any additional states get added at the same rate regardless.
Sorry, just spend most of the day at TN IRP on Thursday and have to be back on Monday. I call the manager OZ because she never came out of her office to talk to me. When I said if she just came out to speak with me we could fix this in a couple minutes I was told she if very busy. Really?!? Because this little trip for me was just interrupting my vacation and I have nothing important that needs to be done (like posting on TTR). -
Since you probably stepped to the window with all businesslike with your paperwork ready, they marked you as a troublemaker from the get-go.
Now don't take a bath or shave this weekend and show up on Monday with an old fuel receipt and an insurance card in a manilla folder. They'll get you squared away in no time.BigBadBill, Hanadarko and yotaman Thank this. -
The big issue was that I still have my IL license. They have very specific rules of how to qualify a business in TN and if you don't meet them then you have to show proof of residency. Man I was the poster child for what they have written out.
Then they let slide several things that I knew I was waiting on documents for. #frustratedatIRPHanadarko Thanks this. -
A friend of mine from here in mcminnville is going monday also to renew his,i will ask him if anyone went postal while he was there.Hanadarko Thanks this. -
Oddly a buddy of mine (taught me flatbedding) had tons of issues with TN too.
I was going to setup my company and what not in TN and after hearing his (and yours issues) I guess I will
take the lesser of two evils and stick with WI! -
