Good morning. I'm very new to this so I have a couple of questions.

    1. I'm getting ready to take my skills test and wanted to know what all might be expected on a pre-trip inspection. I know I will have to point out all the main components on brakes, suspensions, steering assembly, engine compartment, gauges, airbrakes etc. but will I actually be required to check the levels of all fluids such as the Power steering reservoir oil levels, air pressure in tires, etc?

    2. Would you recommend taking your own vehicle and if so, if there are oil leaks or something isn't working right, could that cause you to fail the test (windshield wiper or horn or light).

    3. During the driver observation test, are you allowed to float or do you have to double clutch?

I reviewed various videos on YouTube regarding pre-trip inspection's and there are several instances where defects are obvious but nothing is pointed out during the inspection. In other words all of those inspections that I have viewed have never really demoted a defect. Are the inspectors actually looking for your knowledge and if there are obvious defects should you point them out?

Thanks for your time folks be safe out there.

I would imagine pointing out a defect prior to driving the vehicle would not be a great idea.

Depends on how strict the tester is they don't usually check the fluids, they will only make sure your brake and traffic indicators are working however if they deem your vehicle unroadworthy you won't be doing no test that's for sure.

Your instructors should be pre-tripping all vehicles that will used for testing and making sure fluid levels are topped off and any other issues are taken care of. Don't be afraid to speak up, you are paying good money for them to provide you a service. And part of that service is to have vehicles that pass inspection.

Remember, the school is licensed by the state. If the state starts receiving enough complaints, their license can be pulled.

    Ok.

1- Pretrip that monster until you are told to stop. When you start hauling out that ten foot oil stick is usually that elicts a stop order from the tester...

2- Forget the personal car. If something happens something happens. Big deal. You will get a adventure story some day for your children.

3- SHIFT that *&^%$ don't wuss and float. You might make a enternal enemy of the tester who just about had enough of showboat floaters.
