A lot of wat others say is true. The lag in pay is annoying sometimes. It could be 20 days to get paid. If u turn in bills on Sunday after 12 noon, they wont go into the pay period till that following Friday.6 days. Then they pay out 2 weeks after that(14 days).
We are currently with Panther. We like it fine. That being said there are a few things need to be clear.
Most of the Fleet owners are terrible to work for. Stay away from Cliffside Transportation. A new truck looks great untill you start going broke and you are running your butt off and running hundreds of miles for free deadhead. Doing backhauls at .50 cents a mile split.
Fleet owners will treat you like a company driver but pay you like a sub. Which means you do wat they want when they want but they dont have to pay benefits. You are not a subcontractor at Panther under a fleetowner. You are a company driver without benefits. Dont kid yourself.
So, in order to succeed at Panther you need to do some things.
1- Get your own truck. Its not as hard as you may think and Panther will help you with tags and reggie and ins. Talk to a recruiter. Dont buy from that crook Bobby Schnieder at FIDA Frieghtliner in Columbus,Oh. He is a liar and a thief. Funny thing is Panther recruiters refer him all the time. Dunno why.
2- Get all your quals. Hazmat-government cleared. And try to get a government reefer. This way you can haul everything they have. Why would you take the trouble to go to a company and then only haul half of wat they have?
3- Negotiate! Not all load offers are carved in stone. But be careful. You dont want to negotiate every load otherwise you will get a label. It will take time to get savvy at it. Most of the time you can get tolls and a better rate on the deadhead tho.
4- Get it in writting!!!!!! If you negotiate a deal, get it over the QC BEFORE YOU MOVE YOUR TRUCK. And then take a picture of the QC message. This way when payroll tries to screw you, which they will from time to time, you have ammo.
5-Get into Elite and Life Science and stay away from Gen Ops. I wont go into a big explain of this but it is like working for 2 different companies. That goes back to #2 tho.
6- Buy a tractor!! First I dont think they are hiring cargo vans right now. They have more than they need. Second, straight jobs cost more than a tractor, used. Third, the tractor pays the best and a lotta straights I talk to dont get much better fuel miles than I do. Some are worse because they tend to be under powered. Plus you will be constantly called in the middle of the night to p/u and run a short distance and deliver first thing. This happens to straights all the time. Get used to that.
7- Give it some time. A lotta peeps come and go at Panther because they dont realize the averages. You will have good weeks and not so good but they average out in the end.
Im sure I missed some things but I think if you make the move and do wat Ive laid out, you wont be sorry.
Good luck and be careful
Also I dont know where Lil May gets thier info so I will not comment as to it being right or wrong. However I have not seen any indication of Panther going bankrupt. And this is 7 or 8 months after that statement.Criminey Jade Thanks this. -
