Have a question to any Stevens driver...What does their training classes make you do? I did 5 yrs with CRE as a driver/Trainer and quit in Oct 2010. Up until 2 weeks ago I had not driven a truck and was doing odd jobs and working for the schools out here in Phoenix. I let my CDL lapse due to so many other issues at the time and finally decided to head back out on the road. I recently applied with stevens and even tho my DAC had a minor ding from CRE on the way I quit they hired me and I start their class here in Phx on Apr 23rd. I knew I was gonna have to start all over and got my DOT Med card good for 2yrs. I noticed the last year or so before i quit CRE they were having students climb in and out of trailers as part of the training which I thought was kind of unusual since 95% of time if u have to go into a trailer its backed into a dock. I am a big guy I am 6ft 6in and right now wiegh 321lbs. While at CRE I wieghed over 400lbs so I have lost wieght. Still its not easy for me to climb up and down a trailer. I have had Type 2 dibetes which I take meds..not insulin...for 21yrs and CRE knew this and I have controlled it thru diet and walking. I will be going to the Stevens training classes here in Phoenix for 4wks before going to dallas. So if anyone has been thru the training class and can give me an idea as to what to expect please let me know. Thanks.![]()

Don't really know...have heard good things bout them from some of their drivers while I was running with CRE. Tried couple other companies ans was turned down cuz of the ding on my DAC. Stevens said it wasn't that bad and had a phone interview and was hired. they like that while I was with CRE I had over 500,000mis accident free.

Well I am glad that things are working out for you. I am thinking Stevens because I see a lot of their trucks moving through Columbus Oh regularly so I can get home. I realize I will be gone 4-5 weeks but that is ok. I have heard good things about Stevens Academy. Got class B cdl last year with hazmat and air brake endorsements. Should have gotten A but hind site is 20-20, lol. Already have passport so get extra miles going to Canada. Congrats on 1/2 Million accident free miles. Good luck to you and I think Stevens is a good choice.

thank you...i will be training out here in Phx at AIT which Stevens has a office just for Stevens drivers. then they ship me off to Dallas after the 4 week class for 5 weeks with a trainer. Was told since I have experience may not need full five weeks. they also said for me not to lease for at least 2 yrs. they are askin me to become trainer once I am on my own ....said I could make potentaially $20,000 extra a year. Good luck to you. Maybe we'll meet on the road.

There are several demonstrations of dexterity you will need to do. They aren't all that overt, but they count.
Yes, you will need to climb into a trailer and back out. There are many times you need to do this during your common course of work. Climbing in to set your load locks, check the pulp temperature of produce or to sweep out the trailer after a load.
Another demonstration is you will need to 'walk' under a trailer from one side to another. You can duck walk, hands and knees...whatever you want. You need to do this to inspect your trailer, such as checking your brakes or observing the underribbbing.
You'll need to climb in and out of the tractor. The need for that is obvious.
You won't need to do any pushups, jumping or rope climbs.... that's the good news.
All of the physical requirements are to demonstrate your ability to do the federally mandated requirements of a full PTI. -
Hey thanks...when I was with CRE it wasn't around. During my 5yr sentence with them I think I had to actually climb up into a trailer bout 4 times without the aid of steps or at a dock. Most of the time temping load or setting load locks I did while the trlr was still backed into a door. And as for sweeping or washing it out, I just took it to the truck wash since we had accts with them. The times I was at yrds they always had steps that rolled right up to the back door..I don't think walking/crawling under a trailer will be hard, am big but the times I did have to fix airhoses or stuff just crawled under there and sat if needed or used hands and knees.
