And one tow bill from getting stuck on a banana peel wipes out all the savings…

When I worked for a gashauler outfit in the 90's, we had one that got hung up on the tank fill lids at least once a month. A couple guys could usually roll it off, a tug from a pickup was the most it needed, but a royal PITA, regardless. Why it wasn't spec'd with a diff lock only the bean counter knows...

I've read on here I think it was a Schneider tread. A guy who had a company truck with a dummy axle got hit with a preventable for getting stuck in a pot hole, had to call a tow truck lol

You call a tow truck, it's preventable. And I don't care who you are.....unless you're willing to pay for it yourself.
The company has to make sense of that line item. Either for taxes or insurance or both.

I don't disagree at all. That said, if you're driving a single screw, you need to make your decisions wisely.
I had one of my best drivers get into the same situation. I hated it because I really didn't think it was his fault. But the company sez......

Something from 30 years ago is a world away from what’s available now. A lot of them have smart valves to keep a certain amount of pressure on the drive axle at all times. An owner operator buying a used single drive truck could also take about 2 hours and plumb in a manual regulator and pressure gauge. Or if it’s a truck with an auto lift simply make it a manual lift with a switch on the dash.

I used to buy used Messilla Valley pro stars with the 23,000 pound fully locking single drive axle that you could lock with a button on the dash. They never got stock. You could test the posi traction axle by jacking up one wheel and locking in the differential and it would pull itself off the jack. The trucking industry is so far behind in education its sad.

Single axle is a different weight balance then a dummy axle, you’re comparing apples to dildos
