Install block heater like webasto or espar? Cat C12 Freightliner FLD

OK, some updates. I think that there is nothing wrong with our installation. It only heats the water jacket, obviously, and this is what it does very well.

I have directed its exhaust output (not so hot, maybe 250-300F at most) a small distance from the oil pan to also heat the oil pan as it runs. Realistically it only makes the oil pan a bit warmer, maybe 10 degrees F warmer. The exhaust tube is not UNDER the oil pan and would not get much oil dripped on it.

 

WHAT MODEL DO YOU HAVE?

 

you would have been better oil with oil pan heater and light oil. cheaper and easier to install

That is way too small of a heater for a truck. It is a max 5kw heater and doesn't really heat much, it is the size of heater I have in my pickup and with the -20 degree weather we had, it barely heated the engine and fuel tank up.

You need at least 7kw to warm it up but really need 9kw heater for a truck.

webasto makes a 9kw heater but they also make 12kw heater that would work if you setup heating the oil pan.

 

they make a oil pan heater just like a block heater. take one of the oil plugs out and put heater in. plug up to power cord.

 

I tried it yesterday. It was about 2 degrees F. Ran it for an hour (was doing something else at my warehouse in the meantime). Truck started like it was July.
