How do you "turn the starter" if it has a dead spot? Does jumping the solenoid work for that too?

If the starter has a "dead spot", jumping the solenoid won't help. You will have to pull the truck off, drop the starter and spin the shaft, or replace the starter.
If the starter is already pulled, then replacing is the best thing. First try jumping the solenoid contacts to make sure your switch and wiring leading to the solenoid are good. Check the battery wires going to the starter, and check the ground wire from the starter to the truck frame, and from the frame to the batteries.
Put a wrench on each nut a wire connects to, and loosen, then tighten each nut. You could have corrosion under the nut and never see it.PharmPhail Thanks this. -
When you say drop the starter, you mean remove it? Last time I had a dead spot, the mechanic got under there and did something and it worked. He certainly didn't remove it. I started it there 4 more times then nothing so I said go ahead and replace it. I didn't want to get stuck later. -
He probably turned the flywheel. Your starter drive may have been jammed in the flywheel teeth. You could try doing that. You will need a large screwdriver or small pry bay to turn the flywheel with. If your flywheel cover is off this will be easy.
In fact, if your flywheel cover is off, you may be able to reach inside far enough to get to the starter teeth and spin the shaft a little.PharmPhail Thanks this. -
Ok, that makes sense. I probably won't be able to try turning it, but I'm definitely going to look at jumping it off and checking the solenoid.
Thanks for all the help. I'm going to try and get a few hours sleep after all. -
One more thing to consider. Check to see your batteries are connected together correctly. Make sure all are tied together. I have seen some people leave a cross cable off, and only two were starting the engine and the others going to the cab electronics.

Man, wish I was home right now, I'd grab my toolbox and run over and see what I could do, Pharm. I've replaced enough starters on cars to have at least half a clue.
You need to schedule your maintenance issues better.... like when I'm HOME!!
