Well since we have so much extra time: Brake fade: Unfortunately I was freaking out for 15 minutes before thinking about taking any footage, so you can't see the full effect... This here was my first time going up the gorge on I-40 This was a cool fish farm I delivered to Friday night... raising Tilapia. They claim to be the largest indoor fish farm
Is your jake workin? Why r u smoking your brakes??? Has anyone EVER seen the load boards with these pitiful rates??? I haven't...... I'm sitting in Tacoma WA with a 48 step and everyone is offering a dollar a mile or less to the east coast. Pay the company 13%, 165 a week for the trailer and 145 for cargo and that leaves me...... click, click, whirr, whirr - about 83 - 84 cents a mile!!!
I did notice that you had the engine running. I thought you were being ha-ha funny... you were... weren't you?
It was 9% and I was at 80k (my standard load). I use the jake all the time but coming down I noticed that it doesn't really want to come on in 7th or less gear. 8th and up it comes on loud just by tapping the brake. I don't know what's up with that. I think we figured out that I wasn't applying enough pressure to the brakes while slowing down which increased the time I was riding them to slow down the same amount. Hard to say though, in my memory I had them frantically pressed without great results. Also, this thread hasn't really been about load boards in a long time and I don't use them.
Well I guess I kinda screw myself, because some things are like that and some aren't...so I guess you can never really tell. I was pretty certain in a car you had to have the engine running otherwise all the oil was in the pan. I figured with it running, worst case I would at least get a false low if anything... so when it was all in the pan it would be even higher. That voice quiver in the brake fade video is no joke though... lol I'm lauging now listening to it... I musta been really crapping my pants. I heard all these stories and now low and behold it was happening to me... and I don't like heights at all... much less plummetting over them.
Don't hold a steady pressure going down hill. It is not the propper way, no matter what anyone says. Keep down shiffting until the jake holds . Stab braking works to slow you down and applies enought pressure so all the brakes apply, not just the ones that are adjusted tighter. New brakes will go away faster until they are broke in. Remember you can't go down too slow. Auto slacks self adjust under full application. When stopped make a full brake app. and hold it a few seconds to give the adjusters time to work.
An automatic transmission (car) is the only thing you would check with the engine running. Engine oil is always off, and let it sit for a minute to drain the oil back to the pan. I had a scary ride down Black Mountain because of misadjusted trailer brakes. Auto-slacks or not... I always adjust them before hitting a grade with a heavy load. Get someone to show you howit only takes a few minutes. From what I saw in the video, the tractor brakes were smoking, indicating to me that maybe the trailer brakes were out too far. When the brakes are out of adjustment, it's a fine line between being able to stop and "Oh Schidt!!!!"
